You can try installing the XP drivers. See if that works. But you may have to downconvert back to XP in order to have that connectivity. Sometimes a new OS just plain breaks the connection.
If this doesn't work The touch screen menu on the camera has a function near the bottom that turns USB Streaming on.Try this.
Another solution is to buy a firewire pci card (if it does not already have one) for your pc and a 4 pin cable to connect.
Or else you can just download XP drivers from the sony's website and install it.

If you're using a Windows Vista Operating System it'snot possible to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer using the USB connection. The videos from the tape camcorders cannot be transferred to Windows Vista Operating System as there is no USB Streaming ooption available on the Windows Vista Operating System. The Camcorder uses the USB Streaming function to transfer the videos to the Computer. You may wish to purchase a i.LINK/Firewire cable to connect the Camcorder to the Computer in order to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer. or There is an update for driver on the Sony website to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer using the USB cable. http://support.sony-europe.com/dime/downloads/downloads.aspx?site=odw_en_GB&m=DCR-HC42E&f=usbdrven_vista

The i.LINK cable used to connect the Camcorder to the computer depends on the number of pins available on the i.LINK/FIREWIRE port on the Computer. The i.LINK port on the Computer is a D shaped port which is labelled as i, DV, IEEE1394 and Firewire.
you cannot use usb connection on vista with this camcorder if you want to transfer videos from tape. use a firewire or an ilink cable and windows movie maker to capture videos. no drivers needed.
