Check out the xbox website and use the warranty verification tool to see if it is still under warranty. I believe the consoles with three red rings get an additional couple of years under warranty...

The console has a general hardware failure, if the console is less than 3 years old, and has not been tampered with in any way ie:the console has not been opened,microsoft will repair this issue FREE of charge, click on the link www.xbox.com/support to book a repair,you will need the serial number, and the date of manufacture, these are on the back of the console.

Call 1-800-4MY-XBOX if you see red rings around the power light.  If you just bought it 7 months ago, it is still under warranty.  Do not use one of the custom shops who say they will fix the red ring errors as this will void your warranty with Microsoft.

My son had the same problem exactly a yr ago, and when I checked at the local games shop here, it is a common problem with the xbox!. I had to phone microsoft, which didn't turn out to be too bad, and then had to send the whole (silver) hard drive to them. It took about 2-3 weeks, from memory, but all was free (including post/handling) due to the warranty. I'm from Australia, and it was good to know it could be fixed in my own country,which I was worried about.

my son had 3 rings and we bought another power supply cable. it worked he can play all day now. hope that helps. good luck!
