Sounds like you have a virus or infection, or the keyboard is going
bad. Try booting up in Safe Mode and see if the keyboard works.
Turn off the computer, then hit the power button
to turn it back on and immediately start hitting the F8 key repeatedly until
you see SAFE MODE. Take the Safe Mode option and let it boot up. Safe
Mode will look different to you, the screen will be darker and the icons
bigger, this is normal. If the keyboard works in safe mode then
it proves you might have a virus or infection. Now, turn the computer
off and reboot as if you are going into Safe Mode, but this time take
the Safe Mode With Networking option (this will give you internet
connectivity). When it boots up, open your browser and download and
install MalwareBytes and run a Quick Scan.
Go to www.google.com and in the search box type:
"Download cnet Malwarebytes" (without the quotes). Download and
install malwarebytes from the sites download.cnet/malwarebytes. When the
site opens up click on the Green Download button on the left. Do not
click the Red Download button, that's junk. When it finishes installing the Gui
Interface will open up with an offer to Accept a Trial Version or
Decline. CLICK DECLINE you want the totally free version. Run a
QUICK SCAN. As it scans, if it finds infections the number will be in
red. When it finishes scanning, click SHOW RESULTS. A notepad text
document will open up showing you the results. You can close the text
document and go back to the Gui Interface where you will click REMOVE SELECTED
RESULTS. The objects will already be selected for you. When it
finishes removing the objects click ok and it will sometimes reboot your
machine.
If the above options don't solve the problem then try running a System
Restore. System Restore will allow you to select a Restore Point (date
and time) to roll your system back to before you started having
problems. System Restore does not delete your data, documents, music,
pictures, videos or programs (unless the program was installed after the
restore point you selected). System Recovery on the other hand deletes
everything and sets your system back to when you first purchased it.
To start System Restore click Start/Programs/Accessories/System
Tools/System Restore. Select a restore point (date and time) before you
started having issues with the keyboard.
In Windows 7 click Start then in the search box type System Restore.
Look up at the top for the returned search results and click System
Restore.
SOURCE: the keyboard on my laptop has numbers and keys on it
Hi,
It sounds like the Num Lock is on.
Depending on the make of the laptop there is a few different ways to turn it off.
Either just hit the Num Lock key and see if it goes off, hold down Fn and hit the Num Lock key or hold down the shift key and hit the Num Lock key.
Regards.

On these keyboards, the non colored symbols are typed by holding down the shift key and tapping the symbol. If you want to type the colored key, then you have to hold down the Alt Gr key and tap the colored symbol key.
