Conerning: Toshiba Satellite A60 Laptop doesn't boot now My Friends Laptop had a problem. Sometimes the Laptop shut down after 20 Minutes. He broght the Laptop to the Toshiba Service. They told him, that the motherboard has to be changed and this costs about 350 euro. He said no but he had to pay 60 Euros for identifing the problem. After he get the Laptop back the Laptop doesn't boot any more!!! Now I try to check it. Powersupply is ok DC IN LED : green Battery charge LED: is orange If I switch on 1) the Switch LED(keyboard) goes to blue 2) power on LED (front) goes to green 3) Harddisk starts only for 1 Second 4) The Fan (on the downside) doesn't spin but I can open the DVD/CD Rom Device by the Switch After 1 minute the power light (front and keyboard) side goes out. Can someone help me? best regards Bernhard
We can only assume that because the cd drive operates then the motherboard is operating in part, although, the southbridge chip may be damaged, as the northbridge works memory etc. Maybe it is that the processor is fried as there is no fan and the system then shuts down. Toshiba are probably half way there with the answer, unless; they investigated further and decided it was not the processor but the motherboard.

But this gives no explanation why the laptop works BEFORE he gave it to the shop.
Now I disassembled the laptop. I checked the fan. There was a little dust in, but the headsink was completly clean. Furhtermore i disassembled the headsink and the fan from the cpu. If i removed the headsink the cpu could not released from the headsink because the thermal conductance paste was too sticky to the cpu.
I cleaned the cpu and the headsink, put a new thermal conductance paste on and reassembled the laptop. Now I tried to start the laptop without the harddisk and DVD ROM device.
The first time the fan began to start and i checked the tempreture of the cpu . Getting very hot in short time, but nothing more .
Connect the HD and the DVD ROM. Same result :
HD start for 1 sec. and I can open DVD ROM.
