Question about Samsung DVDR120 DVD Recorder

1 Answer

Player freezes at same time on almost every disk, and recorder programs won't play on anything else.

My problem is two fold.. First, the dvd player will freeze at 1 hour 15 minutes into almost every movie. Cleaning the disks doesn't help. Secondly, if we burn a tv show we can only watch it on that dvd player. It won't play on any other player, or computers. Any suggestions?

You are my new best friend. I feel like an idiot, I never finalized any of the disks.

As for problem 2, yes they are commercial disks. It will start mini freezing at around 1 hour 15 minutes, skip, and then lock up about a minute later. It doensn't do it on every one, about every other one it will.

The last problem is probably because you have not ?finalized? the DVD yet. Basically what that does is modify how the data is stored on the DVD so that a normal DVD player can read it. It also prevents you from modifying or recording to the disk any more so make sure you?re done before performing this. The part about the freezing is more complex, are these commercially recorded DVDs or something someone else recorded?

Thanks for the kind words, my manual wasn't very good and treated that topic as an afterthought. As to the other problem??.

The data is recorded on the DVD starting on the outside and working its way in towards the center. The closer to the center the more difficult it is for the drive to read or write so minor problems on the outside of the disk don?t affect it as much as ones on the inside. One hour and 15 min is fairly far into the disk so that might explain what?s going on.

    As to why:

-Perhaps your players read/write heads need cleaning. If you haven?t done so recently you might want to pickup a DVD player cleaner disk where you got your DVD player and run that.

-Another possibility is the disks themselves. The ones we rent from Netfix or the local rental are for the most part in bad shape. They all have scratches and *stuff* that defies analysis on the top and bottom of the disks, all of which can affect the play. About one out of twenty we rent stop playing, usually after its past 2/3 of the play time. Sometimes I can work around the problem by cleaning/polishing the gunk and scratches off them. I picked up a nice $20 Memorex model where you place the disk inside, apply some polish, close and use the handle to polish the disks.

Again let us know how it goes

Can't play recorded DVD's(from philips 3505) on other dvd players

Hi I am Vortash It very much sounds like you are not finalizing your disks .. any dvd recorder that makes a disc from computer dvd's to free standing unit s work on the same software principle , however the programs do differ slightly and finalisation stanard izes the disc to run on any player, without it another recorder will either not recognize the disk or the language it is written in . Read that message at the end and you will see the option to finalize or it will say do you wish to be able to play this on another dvd or it will do it automatically if you set it to do so in the menu on some sets .
if your player isnt doing this it is not set to do so in the menu settings disks can be finalized at any time after recording providing they are not over filled as the finalization process will take up at least 10-12 mb some do it in more some might do it in less depending on the software hope this helps Regards vortash

Playing burnt DVD disks on other dvd players

It is very possible that the head alignment on your DVD recorder is a little out.

Also, make sure that you are closing the session after doing the recording (burn). If the session is not closed, the DVD will not be playable on other players.

DVD stopped working and cannot do setup.

You probably need to reset your DVD/VCR/Combo. Go to www.samsung.com. Go to <Support>. In the search box, type in the model of your DVD/VCR/Combo. Or type in, >how to reset DVD/VCR/Combo<. Each model has different reset method and there are hundreds of models!

853. How To Reset Your Samsung DVD Player STEP 1
STEP 1. DVD Reset List
Samsung DVD players have a built-in reset procedure that resets the DVD player to the factory defaults. You can use the reset procedure to reset settings that don’t work with your TV or to resolve issues such as unit lock up. To run the reset procedure, you press one or more buttons on the front of the DVD player and hold them for at least fifteen seconds. The buttons your press depend on the model you have.
Important: For the reset procedure to work, you must press the buttons on the front of the player, not on the remote control for the player.
Below is a list of all Samsung DVD players and the buttons to press to run the reset procedure.
DVD511 - Stop / Play
DVD611 - Stop / Play
DVD709 - Stop / Play....

Many, many other models follow but cannot be listed here because of this site's text limitations.

Good luck!

Playing recordable dvd

My Emerson won't play anything except DVD Movies, never has, wasn't suppose too. Make your movies in DVD Video format and it will read them fine (unless it's broke). I make movies all the time and play them back in mine. It reads DVD-R, DVD+R, and in duel layered. It will not read RW disks!

Man I've every problem you can imagine with DVD Players. I've found when the disk gets stuck, as long as it's not jammed. You can turn the unit off or unplug it. Plug it back in but DON'T TURN IT ON! Instead hit the eject button and the drive should open the drive without trying to read the disk.
