Please try a different type of DVD, if the problem persists try a music CD. If the problem goes away then your unit is only reading cds' and NOT DVDs equals defective DVD player
Philips DVP3020 does not support popular vidoe formats such as DivX / xvid / mp4. so if you download movies from the internet and burn to a DVD, chances are it will not work. this philips player is very basic and can only play regular DVDs, VCDs and audio CDs. that is why it is cheap. you should try Philips DVP 3010 or 5140, even better the 5960.
For whatever reason I can't find that exact model number listed anywhere (as far as a spec sheet or manual) but the only type of cds it could possibly play would be either:
Music CDs VCDs (video cds) or SVCDS (super video cd)
Only select dvd players will play the latter two, so make sure it is listed as being able to do that (most players will have logos / icons on the front of the player depicting what it will play).
You might be able to convert them to DVD-Video format if you've got a DVD burner
and the right software.
Another possible option would be converting them
to a Video CD/Super Video CD if the DVD player can play Video CDs or Super Video
CDs and you have a CD burner and software that can burn VCDs/SVCDs
