Installed a dvd rw on a compaq5310us with a philips 4801 cd/rw the 4801 continually cycles and won't stay closed. Tried to update firmware at Philips site but says not available. Any suggestions. Tried changing jumpers from cs to m/s also did not help
If the button is not stuck in then the drive is damaged especially if it opens on boot up.If the button is not stuck in then the drive is damaged especially if it opens on boot up.

The drive name itself is the clue to know whether it can burn dvds or not.
In your case it's a CD-RW (read and write or rewritable) and DVD-ROM (Read only memory and not read and write or rewritable as in the case of CD)
Perhaps the one who told you did not understand your question properly , and understood it , in the sense that it can read CDs as well as DVDs , as far as Dvd-ROM drives are concerned many shopkeepers who are especially new working in the shop just make a guess and answer our question which could lead to this misunderstanding or incorrect information being passed on.
So the next time you buy a DVD drive which should have a read and write functionality as well , then look up for a CD_RW,DVD-RW drive.
Also remember that DVD-RW drive can by default read and write CDs as well , but it's not true for CD drives..
So usually a DVD-RW drive can read and write Cds as well as DVDs but a CD-RW drive can either read or read and write a DVD depending on whether it's a DVD-ROM or DVD-RW.
Is your DVD drive a Combo DVD ROM and CD Read/writer? If so it cannot burn DVD only reads DVDs and read and burn CDs.
If the program cannot find a DVD burner then either the burning software cannot support that model DVD burner ot the DVD burner is faulty.
To test the DVD burner, remove it and install it into another computer to test the burner to see if is faulty.
You will find a small hole on the face of the drive. This is the manual eject mechanism. Insert any wire-like object (a properly sized size paper clip works real well) and push until the disk ejects.
Note: Many times the mechanism is recessed quite far behind the face plate, so make sure the object you use is long enough (again, paper clip).

You shouldn't need a cd. If you are using XP or vista and hooked up to the internet windows will take care of the driver for you with all but the most obscure cd drives.
Hi, what driver do you need? i had the same drive and you dont need drivers for the drive just nero or easy cd creator to copy with..
All the best
John
