Help needed The zen was working fine, but about every 5 minutes, it would freeze and I could not turn it off. Now, when I try to turn it on, It either wont turn on, or it will freeze when it says, "rebooting library". Then when I try to put music onto it, The computer says, "No devise detected it USB port. Press F5 to refresh music player." But when I press F5, nothing happens. Now it wont turn on at all.

Now convinced this is bad boot sector on the HD and searching for a repair utility (the inbuilt zen reformat option doesn't sort it) or have to replace HD with new one.
My Zen locked when I turned it on. It wouldn't play the track the screen was on so I pressed the reset button and turned it on again. It was then still locked on the same track so I tried turning it off which then froze as it was shutting down. After another reset it went through the rebuild screen then locked again. I then used the above fix (pin in reset, then hold play and power switch down). Taking me into the kind of bios screen I formatted the contents. Then added my library again. It's now working fine.
This is the second Zen I've had because the first one had the same problem so I took it back without trying to fix it. Both times the problem occured when I had my Zen plugged into my car stereo auxiliary jack whilst switching the ignition on in my car. I can't understand why this would cause the problem but I'll avoid doing that in future.
There is a small reset point on either the base or side. When the player freezes press a needle into the point and it will reset the player. Creative have instructions on their website. Go to Contact, tecnical help and search for 'freezing' and they run you through reset sequence..... worked for me.
Hi - I know this response is way late to help you, but I was having the same problem. I could turn the zen on fine, but as soon as I tried to play music it would freeze and I couldn't turn it off. Using the reset button didn't help any since it would still freeze if I tried to play anything.
But I found reformatting the entire zen totally fixed it.
-directions- Connect your zen to your computer, go to windows explorer, click computer on the side bar, and your zen should be under "portable devices". Click on it. You should now be viewing the "storage media". Right click and select "Format...". This completely resets the zen, clearing any preferences or media you put on it and the freezing problem.
It was annoying putting all the pictures, videos, and itunes back onto my zen, but at least it works now. Since I've reformatted it, I have had no problems.
Hopefully this helps others who experience this problem. --Lillian
Ok, I'm not sure how safe this is for your player, but it worked for me. I just had this problem about 5 minutes ago and i was looking around the internet, but didn't find ****. I got frustrated and decided to see if i could find a way on my own. well i did.. kinda. I had it plugged into the USB port and kept on pressing the reset button until i heard the windows "usb device" noise, and it booted in recovery mode. i erased the firmware and i reinstalled it and all that, now it works fine. post back and let me know how this works for you
I have the same problem .. But i found a trick ...When you have a blank screen. 1 you must listen music else press play until you listen it 2. flip the switch on the side to lock position 3. press on buttom the next tune 1-2 seconds 4. you will have a black screen ( you listen the music again) 5. flip the switch on the side to normal position. 6 the screen appear ok now..
7. else repeat ( most time once is ok but sometimes 2 or 3 times)
Zen V is dead "If your Zen V is dead, wont respond to anything, try this, plug it in to the computer, hold the power switch in the on position, THEN trigger the reset button, worked like a charm for mine, I had thought it a lost cause."
Try to add your music a bit at a time instead of your whole library at once. That will freeze it. You can also try sync with Window's Media Player, which works a lot better than the Creative software.
