We bought this camera from a friend and used it for less than a month before the problem came up. Get blurry green images on the LCD and pictures turn out horrible.

Thanks for the tip. I am going to send it to Nikon to see if they can fix it.

I am so greatful for the solution by "scottinga". I had used the camera for the past two days with no problems. After going through airport security and held up by a passenger trying to take everything on board but the kitchen sink who was ultimately taken away and never seen from again, I thought my camera sat too long in their x-ray machine. Thank you for the link to Nikon.

The display is distorted but the lens operates properly.

Does the distortion affect the pictures too? I mean do you see the distortions on the pictures when you transfer them to the computer? Please answer this question as it is important to determine whether its an image sensor fault or a problem with the screen itself

No image in viewfinder or on lcd screen

This is a very common problem which affected millions of cameras manufactured using Sony's 5MP CCD. The symptoms you describe are absolutely classic but to confirm it try viewing older shots taken before the problem arose using your camera's LCD: they should display as normal.

Contact Sony in your country: they have been offering free repairs for this problem, my 2004 Sony DSC-V1 was repaired under the scheme last summer.

When you get your camera back, be on the lookout in the few months afterwards for what look like water droplets on every picture. These indicate a faulty repair where the technician has got something on the CCD and Sony won't accept responsibility for further remedial work after a certain mount of time. I found out the hard way when I noticed this second fault last month but Sony said I'd left it too long before notifying them!

Distorted color on image

You might have "color filter" settings. Turn the digital filters off. Here is what manual at p72 says. "You can take pictures using digital filters. The filters consist of color filters such as red, blue and green, a soft filter that produces a fuzzy effect. Color filters Eight colors, black-and-white, sepia, red, pink, violet, blue, green and yellow, are provided for the color filters. When you select a color filter in the Digital Filter mode, the display on the LCD monitor is filtered with the selected color, and the pictures are taken in that color."

In camera mode, screen shows a blend of image and digital spectrum analyzer bars blurring the image

the ony way is to get the CCD replaced with a new one. Contact NIKON for free replacement as this comes under manufacturing defect.
