the drivers for the scanner might have been corrupted
you might have to uninstall the scanner restart your computer then reinstall your scanner
if your printer/scanner came with an installation disc the drivers could be on it
you might have to uninstall the printer/scanner restart your computer then reinstall the printer/scanner and its drivers
click start control panel administrive tools computer management device manager scroll to ports(COM&LPT) + to expand you should see a communication port and Ecp printer port you might see a yellow?question mark this will mean you need to install a new driver for this device right click you will have options to update driver,disable,uninstall or select properties again you will have the similiar options also have option to troubleshoot
lift the lid on your scanner lay the photo face down then select scan document/photo it will ask what format you want to scan it then it will ask where you want to save it browse select the file/folder where you want to save it (my pictures) most common

If you have the orginal software that came with your scaner and it says that it is compatible to Windows XP, you may need to use the disc to reinstall it. YOu will first need to turn off the scanner and unplug it from the PC. Then uninstall the old software from install/uninstall in your control panel. (start>control panel>install/uninstall programs, search the list for your scanner software.)

If you do not have the software or it is not for Windows XP:

Before you begin any download make sure your virus control software is up to date.

First click on the link "Instructions for XP installation and print it out.
Next click on a driver for XP from the chart to download it. When a window pops up click save and browse until you locate desktop. Save this file to your desktop. It will be an .exe file.
Turn off your scanner and unplug it from your PC and uninstall the oldsoftware as advised above.
Click on your new driver file to install it. Follow instructions.
Once the driver is installed, plug the scanner back into the computer and turn it on.
Restart your computer.
It should now recognize your scanner.
Try a scan.

A few options you could try here,
i. Uninstall any programs you installed just before having this issue..
2. Restore you pc back to the time/date when all was working well.

Helen, I feel that the scanner part of the SW has gone corrupt for whatever reason. You must first uninstall the scanner from Control Panel. The reboot the PC and reinstall the scanner. Once done then only you must connect the scanner to the PC. Now allow some time for the Windows to detect the scanner and load its drivers. And when you get a message in the right bottom corner of the screen saying "Your new HW has been installed and is ready for use", you can start scanning documents either from specific program for it or from the word processor. Hope it works for you.

YOU CAN TRY CLOSING EVERYTHING OUT BEFORE USING THE SCANNER
IF THAT DOES'NT WORK SOMETIMES UNINSTALLING THE CANNER THEN REINSTALLING WILL FIX THE PROBLEM
OTHERWISE YOU MAY NEED TO UPGRADE YOUR MEMORY

you probably need the drivers hp scanner for vista if that is your operating system let me know make and model of scanner will find them for you
