First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot andgo into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If itdoesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Then the hard drive needsto be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer orlaptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioningcomputer/laptop again.

SOURCE: i have a gateway mp8708

One of two things are likely your problem:

1) The battery is so dead that it's preventing any power from reaching the rest of the PC. Try pulling the battery out, plugging the laptop in, and turning it on.

If that doesn't work,

2) The motherboard power converter is burned out. If this is the case, unfortunately you will need a replacement motherboard or a replacement laptop.

Good luck, and hope this is helpful!

SOURCE: I have hP mini 1000 that won't boot up

you will need a copy of windows and an external disk drive then have it boot from the cd when it boots select install windows then leave the current drive intact with no changes or if the repair option comes up you can select that. do not select the repair at the first menu unless you are an expert in dos, always go to the install.

Gateway MP8708 Won't boot past BIOS and won't boot into CD/USB/Safe Mode on XP - Blank screen with keyboard dead - Num locks on and wireless light

Somehow your MBR (Master Boot Record) likely got corrupted or possibly your hard drive went bad coincidentally.

Simply, you will start your computer from your Windows CD/DVD install disk, then when at a DOS prompt ( D:\ ) you will then type: FDISK /MBR (press enter).

Find your Operating System install DVD and start your computer with it, then follow instructions within this discussion:
Restore Windows XP MBR without Windows XP disc

Alternatively, review my search results for other instructions:
fdisk mbr windows xp Google Search

Windows won't start up? Well, try this Download Tenorshare Data Recovery from its offical site and install it. Burn it into CD/DVD, or USB flash, put into the computer you need to repair, Bios setting. It can make sure your important data will not lose. Best of luck

Cannot find my recovery disk for my gateway mp8708. need some guidance. Got rid of several old computers over the holidays and expect that disk got put with one of the ones I gave to Goodwill.

Gateway has a site on the topic

http://support.gateway.com/s/software/medialess/faq/suppage01su44.shtml

If your system is intact, you can create the recovery CDs, following the instructions.

If not, you need to order a new set.

There is no legal place to download recovery CDs, since they contain copies of the Microsoft OS.

Hi,
Take the battery out and try to boot it on AC power only, if the machine boots but can't load the operating system then the ticking sound could be and sounds like the hard drive has possibly failed.

Good luck.
