HP Photosmart 3210 Printer Logo

Printer will not start

When turned on, the printer says Error Press OK to continue

When I press Ok the message says Improper Shutdown To avoid damage, use the On button to shut down the printer. Do not use a power strip or wall switch to shut down. Press OK

These two messages just keep repeating themselves and the printer sounds like it is trying to work but is unable to.

HP 3210 - Same thing. When turned on, the error message: "Improper Shutdown" appears regardless of how you turned it off. It then goes into the "System Maintenance" mode which runs the print head back and forth down the carriage. The "System Maintenance" has always occured since I got the printer and seems normal. What isn't normal is the loud clicking sounds that now accompanies the maintenance. Louder than before...sounds like one of the plastic cogs is out of position or like something isn't catching like it should. Then comes the "Error: Press OK to continue."

The whole process repeats after you use the power switch to turn it off. Printer still will scan but copy and print aren't operational.

    Thank you speters9971!!!!!!

    I
have spent hours trying to solve another problem, "ink system failure
error 0xc18a0001." After not having any luck with those solutions, I
did a search for the "improper
shutdown" problem since it was a simultaneous issue. This is where I
found my solution for both issues!

Thank you speters9971!!!!!!! I was almost ready to buy a new printer. I cannot express my gratitude in words!!!!

This is likely a hardware problem. However you can try a sem-full reset to factory default conditions by 1. unplugging the power cord while the printer is powered on and 2. press and hold the OK and Cancel buttons while plugging in the power cord. If this this does not clear the error you probably have a hardware issue. On my printer, after going through a diagnostic procedure with the HP Chat Tech and concluding a hardware issue I did a bit more research and then took the printer apart. It turns out that a fairly common problem is for the large white gear on the left side of the printer that drives the ink pump comes off the shaft. I reassembled it to the shaft and put the printer back together. When I plugged in the power cord the printer started and did about a 5 minute maintenance procedure and now works fine.

2?Press the “#” key and release both keys,Display should say “Enter Special Key Combo”
3?Press and release in sequence the “1”, “2” and “3” buttons
4?Press and release the right arrow button until the display says “System Configuration Menu”.

7?Press and release the “OK” button.

9?Press and release the “OK” Button. Message changes to “Hardware failure status Cleared. Press Cancel to continue”.
10?Press and release the “CANCEL” button as many times as necessary, so that, either the “Welcome to Photosmart Express” screen appears, or, the “Ink System Failure” screen appears. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO PRINT AT THIS STAGE.

The Printer will start the “ONE TIME INK INITIALIZATION PROCESS”. Allow this process to complete and do not interrupt. Once the initialization process is complete, the printer will print out a Diagnostic Page.

After you perform the steps listed above, when you are at the step at the end where you are pressing the cancel button until you get to the WELCOME screen, if at some point you see a message, “Inproper shutdown, hit OK”, go ahead and hit OK and the Welcome screen should appear.
One thing that is nice about this method is that it doesn't use up all your ink doing a recalibration.
The error message should not pop up so try to print a self test Press Setup menu on the All-in-One then scroll using the arrow key and select Print Report then select Self Test Report.

all the best
