When the t.v. is turned on for awhile I start to hear a popping sound coming from the back. The popping becomes more frequent and louder (apparently having nothing to do with the volume). Then the T.V. screen will go to black with no audio or video. The T.V. will turn back on after a couple of seconds by itself. Within a few more seconds the shutdown repeats itself. Any suggestions?
27 inch RCA about 4 years old.
A new receiver was yesterday installed by DirecTV and the problem was not noticed at that time.
When using the "guide grid" the grid shakes and vibrates left and right.
White lines appear on screen on all channels, moving and changing sizes.
Turing the TV off, a white background picture with diagonal lines show briefly. The TV goes off with a popping sound.
You apparently have a high voltage arc.
Possibly the anode lead to your picture tube.
Also the flyback transformer could be arcing.
If you're not experience with tv repair, you need to have a tech check it for you. The circuits operate at very high voltage and if you get into it you can get a possibly fatal electrical shock.
Be careful !!!

my first question is have you checked the bulb. the loud pop sound like the bulb blew and the rattling sounds like the lamos trying to fire. remove the bulb cover and unscrew the bulb
Same problem with my 28 inch 16:9 CRT Sanyo. I usually fix it by cutting the power to the outlet and then it works fine. Had it into the repair shop - and of course it never acts up there...
Unfortunately, we have the same problem. We hear popping and our sound goes lower. It is not the cable box for us, it's definitely the TV; however, it happens, on our set, after its been on for a few minutes and then goes away after half an hour or so -- however, this evening its been happening for the past hour and the TV has been on for the evening.
If you ONLY have an Antenna or Cable input, you are going to need a Video & Audio to RF converter.. This connects to ya DVD Video & Sound OUT, and then connects to ya sets Antenna IN.
This device converts ya Video & Audio signal to Radio Frequency Signal that can be "Received" by ya set. (Basically a low power TV transmitter)
This is the only way I know of, if ya haven't got any other Inputs into a set.
The anode cap on the back of the tv tube is leaking the high voltage be careful as going into the back of a tv it store very high voltage and could be fatal.the solution to problem get a tube of clear or red silicone discharge the high from the tube, you do this by getting a alligator clip with wire attach clip to a ground wire on the back of the tube attached the other end of the wire to screw driver gently push it under the Anode cap you will hear a popping sound with i little sparks. remove the cap from off the tube get some alcohol wipe the dirt away apply the silicone around the anode and the anode cap place in on back and leave it to dry and cure for about 7 hrs close up back and turn on your tv and all the popping sound is gone.good luck.but if it is the wire for the anode cap that comes from the flyback is the one leaking change the flyback.again good luck.contact me on fixya.com or email me at [email protected]
