1st thing to do is to read the manual. There is a comprehensive manual on the software dis that came with the camera in addition the the quick start booklet. Fow the camera to operate it needs batteries, and memory card installed. then switch on and pop away. But get to grips with the book it tells you all you need to know.

From the start, the camera has been very heavy on batteries, both rechargaeble and non-rechargeable. I am told that this camera is known to have a fault. Is this so? As per my previous mail, when...

First of all, referencing a 'previous mail' is of little use - at Fixya, posts are made on forums when requesting assistance.
Secondly, you say 'even re-chargeable batteries' - not all re-chargeable batteries are alike. Many people recommend the use of 2500mAh re-chargeable batteries to provide power to cameras.
Thirdly, I cannot comment on the suggestion there may be a fault with this particular model - a Google search may provide more information on this matter.

When powered on the LCD screen doesn't come on my sony cyper-shot DSC-W80 screen comes on in menu or home mode but goes dark when you go back to shoot mode

Sounds like a wire inside your camera going into the camera's shutters may be separated, broken, or shifted. Might be a defected camera, otherwise send it to repair; they'll know what to do.

My pict from s500 show white lines, but that is nothing problem when use to recorder/cam record & candleligt fiture.

Unfortunately the shutter motor is broken, so normal pictures will be over-exposed. If you use it as a recorder or candlelight function the shutter mechanism doesn't need to work because the shutter is always open.
Fix that problem is very difficult, unless you get a new lens block.
Hope this helps,

Change batteries message pops up with new batteries

Chargeable batteries usually last for a year or two. Alkaline batteries should only be expected to last for around a dozen shots (as such, NEVER rely on alkaline batteries). Recommend buying another set of NiMH rechargeables. Make sure you get 2500 mah or better power rating (look on the package).

Sony cyber-shot DSC-S500

If you open the camera up, whick I know is an intricate task, and take the screen down but don't unplug it, at the right bottom their is something that resembles a watch battery, if you can figure out how to get it off and find a replacement it will be fixed... This battery serves a a sort of memory power, even though you have batteries, this battery keeps the memory for the camera's software, so inturn without it the camera is dead in the water. this is fixable!
