In the optoma hd-81 there is a lamp unit housing.It goes faulty the lamp unit housing .There is no ballast in the hd-81 projector.There is lens ,the lamp unit housing and the circuit board.In most of the cases the lamp unit housing goes faulty.In that case the lamp housing needs to be replaced.It can be replaced and replacement lamp is also available.

by pops? do you mean it explode? how many lamps? it could be the fan that supposed to be ventilating the lamp or it could be the the ballast, why the ballast because the ballast regulates the voltage in order the keep the lamp on, for ignition it sends around 15,000 volts after that it regulates the votage to a small amount of voltage around 5,000 so it could be sending the big amount of voltage all the time never regulates that or it could be regulating and then sending another big amount of voltage over and over until the lamp doesnt handle those changes.

If its Sony KDF-E55A20 TV then it sounds that lamp in TV is getting weaker, time is coming to replace lamp.

There are two thumb screws at lower corners of TV, lose them and take off lower front panel of TV, there you will see lamp cover, unscrew and remove it, lamp is in front of you. Lamp replacement procedure is written in user manual, click Sony Support to download user manual copy of KDF-E60A20 if required.

Lamp replacement is not difficult in Sony KDF-E60A20 TV and procedure is written in user manual. Unscrew two thumb screws at lower corner at back of TV and take off lower front panel, in approx center of lower front of TV, lamp cover is located, unscrew it, remove it and lamp is there, unscrew lamp with hex key (supplied in new lamp box) and take out old lamp, put new lamp and put things back in reverse order.
