The problem is in one or two of the door switches, or the keypad control board is the source of trouble.

That would almost certainly be a problem on the control circuit board. If the bulbs happen to short / blow out or if they are removed or installed while the microwave is still plugged in, there is often an arc which causes damage to the board. We repair regularly these boards for such problems for $32.50 nationwide.

You can see and hear a video of how a turntable motor should sound when you rotate it by hand.

If yours is not set to be off via the control panel, and it won't rotate or it sounds like it's grinding, etc., you may have a bad motor or plastic coupler.

To replace either, you need to unplug power, then remove the bottom cover of the oven.

If yours is a GE, you can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

If yours is a GE, there should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Details of our service and critical safety information and disassembly information is at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

SOURCE: GE Microwave JE2160 does not heat

Does it make any noises that it didn't before it failed?? It could be a bad secondary interlock switch, cook relay on the PCB, HV circuit problem or bad magnetron. You need an ohm meter to troubleshoot. If you take the cover off, you MUST short across the High Voltage Capacitor terminals to discharge any possible residual charge to prevent shock hazard.

I have a GE Microwave oven model JVM1790SK01. The surface light switch doesn't work - the lamp stays on all the time; won't dim to night light and won't turn off

There are wires going from the main board to the surface lamp and turntable. They are thin orange, yellow and blue wires. I think the surface lamp is yellow and the turntable wires are orange. You should first try taking the bottom cover off. There are about 8 screws under neath and the bottom cover hinges on the back edge, just let it hang. You can now see the wires. Those wires short to the case where they go through from the main board to the lamps or turntable motor. You now have to move them away form the case. Sometimes they get pinched to the metal cabinet by the lamp socket area. Look for signs of pinched wiring there at the lamp socket or where they go through. Move them away, tape up the bad area.

That's on page 33 of the owner's manual. If you've misplaced yours, it's archived online here.
