Richard,

Only two things drive video. The graphics card and the motherboard. Sounds like m'board is eligible for a serious tech session.

SOURCE: video graphics card

being a PCI card, not a AGP or PCI-E the system may not simply switch to that one a primary display adapter when you install it, in the bios under advanced system settings or intergrated periferals, you should have an option to change the primary display adapter, make sure a PCI adapter is included.. if it isnt, chage it to recognise a PCI card as a primary adapter, turn the system off, and install your card then, depending on the bios/model of the mainboard on some of those dells, it may be a little hard to find, ive had to play with a few of them

1. open your cabinet.
2. remove the battery form the motherboard.
3. wait 15 seconds and then replace the battery again.
4. connect your screen to the pci ex card.

now it should work.

ATI FireGL 8800 graphic card show black screen in digital mode

You didn't tell more details about your problem with your graphics card so I can troubleshoot what will be the problem with it. Before I solve it, lemme ask you a few question:
Since your OS is Win XP, is it 32bit or 64bit? What is your CPU frequency clock speed? What application does your graphics has a problem? And also, what is your monitor's maximum resolution? And what is your mobo (sometimes this has some source of issues).
I'll wait for your response to this. Thank you.

My inspiron 8100 has 64MB of graphics card memory but it is only showing 32MB before the lcd went bad and shows dark screen with rectangular lines of different colors. I purchased lcd on ebay and still...

The graphics card - it overheated because the radiator makes a bad contact on the chip in these models. Unfortunately the damage is extensive, the repair would cost even more than another working laptop - just get a new one.

Problem with my vga

Did you have an ATI card previous to the Nvidia card you are now using. It could still be showing in your Hardware device manager as the primary device (or onboard graphics). If so,delete it and reinstall the Nvidia card and all should be well.

Graphics upgrade

Hi Brian,

First, can you look on the back of your neighbor's PC and get the exact model #? Also, upon boot, can you also get the BIOS manufacturer and its date?

If the BIOS is not recognizing the newer video card, it might need an upgrade, if one is available. I would check the DELL site:
http://support.dell.com/support/

Upon reboot, listen for system beeps and look them up here:
http://bioscentral.com/

Does the newer graphics card show up under CONTROL PANEL > DEVICES?

If this Dell PC is as old as you say, can I assume it is still running Windows ME? If so, was Universal Plug and Play ever installed - check http://support.microsoft.com/kb/262458?

Due to the ages of all this gear, you'll likely have to install device drivers for the "8Mb 3D card" but you will first need the BIOS to recognize it.
