Hello,
I have a Panasonic PT47WX51CE HDTV and am having problems with convergence. I have not had convergence issues with the unit until today. When I turned the TV on, the screen initially looks to have been pincushioned in, meaning the center looked relatively aligned, but the edges were stretched out with varying levels for RGB.
Further troubleshooting revealed the problem only manifests when I have a 1080i source hooked up. In this case the problem occurs both with a PS3 and my cable box (note SD channels work fine, but HD do not - similarly the PS3 works fine for 420p but not 1080i).
I bought the service manual and am following the fine convergence steps but am finding it difficult to get everything aligned (I am sure this is just time and patience on my part). One thing that I did notice was that when I enter the service menu and select my 1080i source, it has highlighted in red 1080i and 4:3 mode format.
It's my understanding that 4:3 mode doesn't really exist for 1080i. The model TV I have should be running in 16:9 with 1080i. Can anybody offer insight into some of the problems I'm having?
Thanks,-Rocco
Get a new repair guy. Actually, the TV is working fine, it just needs
convergence aligned for the 1080i mode. You need to find someone who knows
how to do it properly and if this guy didn't know that you have to align CRT
based sets specifically for all scan modes, he is not the "repair guy" that
you want to be using.
It wld cost you around $400 to rectify this.
Thnx.
There are some circuits that align the RED, GREEN, and, BLUE, picture tubes to make the picture you see.
**Please understand that by opening a TV you are exposing youself to many dangers, including electrocution. Be sure that the set is un-plugged and keep one hand behind your back whenever possible to avoid a shock through the heart as this CAN KILL YOU. If you have zero electronic experience I would not attemp this repair.**
OK, public service announcement over.
The components that do that job are called "convergence" circuitry. The usual components to fail are the "Convergence Amplifiers" which are usuall a pair of Integrated Circuits mounted to a large heatsink. (STK-392) may be printed on the IC along with some number such as 110, 160, 120.
Also look for burnt resistors around these components, as it is common. If the problem is isolated to only one color the replacing those STK amps and any burnt resistors will fix it. If all the colors are out of whack (Red, green, and blue, like a 3d effect all over) then you are likely looking at a fuse gone bad in the voltage supply to those amplifiers. Usually Sony or Mitsubishi have these fuses. The fuses (called "pico-fuses") are generally orange, or green, with no color stripes like resistors have.
You can look up these parts online easily with the exception of the burnt resistors and fuses which you usually need a manual(which you can also purchase online). The STK's price will vary from $15-$90 depending on which one, and the resistors have to be of the metal oxide type so as not to change value with heat.
One place to get parts is http://www.partstore.com/ you will need your model #.
To get a service manual try www.manualsparadise.com
It is an intermediate DIY, you should have a good understanding of electronics and soldering abilities.
If you want a professional to repair it, be prepared to part with around $300-$400.
Hope that helps!
