I had the same problem. The next day I tried it again. It took about 5 hours to charge and then it froze. There were also songs on it that we had not recorded. This was in a sealed case! I took that one back the next day and got a new one. Today we charged that one and it only took about 2 hours. As soon as my daughter tried to go through the screens it froze again. You can't even shout it off! I am very frustraited!!!!!!

Will not recharge

Have you tried plugging this into a USB2.0 port ? sometimes, some of the usb ports dont not have enough power to charge some players.

Which is which is why, sometimes, (seen very often with external hard drivers) there are two usb plugs on the computer side which needs to be connected.

1) Try another USB port, or another computer (especially is this is a laptop, some of the ports are under powered, to save power)

2) if you have an AC Adaptor to charge this, try it with that

Battery wont recharge-

Below are some things to check for when charging your Sansa player:
USB Cable Make sure that the USB cable is properly plugged in and use the original cable that came with your player. Make sure the computer isn't entering hibernation or sleep mode while the device is connected. The computer must be ON in order to charge your player. USB Port 2.0 Make sure the player is connected to a USB 2.0 port (1.1 occasionally causes charging problems). USB Port location Try plugging into different USB ports (i.e. USB port in the back of the computer); occasionally the front USB ports have limited power to charge up the device. Battery Make sure the battery is fully charged. It takes approximately 3 hours to fully charge the battery. Latest firmware Depending on what Sansa player you have, make sure it's up to date with the latest firmware. AC charger (optional) AC chargers (sold separately) have a 500-1000 milliamp max output, which provides much better charging ability than a USB port. These accessories are available on our online store.
To Remove the Battery... 1. Remove the back on the e200 by removing the 4 screws. 2. Lift off the back by using a finger nail or a small flat head screw driver. It will not take a lot of force to remove. NOTE: When replacing the e200 battery be sure that the contacts on the battery line up with the contacts on the player. 3. The battery has three gold contacts on one end of the battery, which is near the words SanDisk Sansa. Be sure these contacts match up with the three gold contacts on the back of the player. 4. Lightly push the lined up battery up against the contacts of the player until the bottom end of the battery can be pushed into place. 5. Replace the lid to the back of the player and then plug the player into the computer using the Sansa cable. 6. Once the player has connected to the computer and is ready to be used or says "Connected", unplug the device.
NOTE: If the device goes directly to a black screen after unplugging it, then the battery has been replaced incorrectly. Take the back off the player once again and flip the battery around and the e200 device should work properly.

Hi
Check the Manual
User’s Guide

Hay Don't worry it will work
Note: Some low-power USB ports may not be able to provide enough
charge power. Also note that rechargeable batteries may
eventually need to be replaced as they have limited charge
cycles (which vary with use and settings).

Li-ion Battery
The Sansa e200 MP3 player comes with a replaceable and rechargeable
lithium ion battery. To use the player for the very first time, remember to
fully charge the Li-ion battery. You can charge your Sansa through the USB
port of your computer, a car adapter (not included) USB port, or AC adapter
(not included) USB port.

Please execute the following instructions for charging the battery using
an USB port.
1) Connect the smaller end of the USB cable into an available USB
port on the computer
2) Connect the larger end of the USB cable into the dock connector of
the player
3) The computer must be on for most USB ports to charge your
battery. Your Sansa will show connected and the yellow charging
indicator will appear. The battery level indicator will blink while
charging. You will not be able to play while connected to the
computer USB.
4) To stop recharging, disconnect the cable.
The battery can also be charged using an AC adapter (not included) or
a car adapter (not included) and you will be able to play your device
while charging with one of the adapters. The battery will reach
approximately 70% charge in 2.5 hours and full charge in about 3.5
hours. It is recommended that you fully charge your Sansa e200
before the first use.

Sansa Recovery Tool
PDF how to use recovery tool

Answer The power may be depleted fully or the Connect might be hung during boot. Charge the Connect for at least 20 minutes using the AC charger. If the Connect will not turn on after 20 minutes charging with the AC charger, you can then try using the Connect Recovery Tool.

The recovery tool will reformat and reload the latest firmware to the Connect. The tool and instructions are located here.

Note: Ensure the Connect is turned off by holding the power button 8-10 seconds before initiating the recovery sequence.

The e200 can operated under two different modes, MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) mode and MSC (Mass Storage Class) mode.

To see the MicroSD card as a Removable Disk, the e200 must be in MSC mode. The following screen shots show how the "My Computer" screen will look when the device is plugged in under each mode.

you can format it though

Can't connect!

Has to be Windows XP for either USB Mode but im not sure whether u can connect it to other computers under different versions of Windows or not and I know Apple computers dont work at all with the Sansa E200 series. Also connect ur Sansa to the rear USB inputs instead of the front inputs. Something that has to do with power distribution if none of these call their tech support they were very helpful with my issue.
