SB600 Flash doesn't fire for every shot

I have an SB600 and a Nikon D7000 which I have set up using the command mode. All seems to work at first when testing until I'm actually using it on a shoot. The Flash doesn't fire for every shot, it seems that I need to be in a specific position. I've tried to make sure nothing is blocking the signal, but this makes taking a picture very limited when it comes to how I'm positioned to my subject. Any idea what's the problem?.

F the flash is not blown, it most likely is wiring/innards that are not connected properly. To fix this you simply need to take apart the camera, locate and reattach said part - or take it to a shop. For more troubleshooting hacks check Nikon D3100 Manual https://guideusermanual.com/product-name-d7000-manual&po=4303&lang=English

SOURCE: sb600 wireless mode not working...

Remember that even though sb-600 is wireless, it is based on infrared. This usually means having a clear line-of-sight between flash commander and remote flash. Any object that gets in way can block signal from flash commander. Weak batteries in flash will also cause remote operation to be sporadic.

SOURCE: nikon sb600 flash

Auto zoom only works when on the hot shoe of the camera. You also need to make sure that its in the righht mode (make sure that above the word Zoom on the display it doesn't have a "m").

Oh and of course you have to have a CLS (Creative LIghting System) compatible camera.

SOURCE: D90-Sb600 help

To use the flash in commander mode the "pop-up" flash still has to emit the triggering/control pulse to cause your Nikon flash to fire. With the camera set to "--" mode the flash still fires but the flash does NOT provide a large enough output to provide any exposure. The "flash" only provides the "trigger pulse", to enable your SB-600 to fire.

The only way to prevent any kind of flash in Commander Mode would be for you to purchase an Nikon SU-800 Command Unit, this is effectively a flash with out a "flash tube" , but it does the same job as the "infra red" section of your SB-600.

Hope this helps
Cheers

I want to use my nikon d80 with my sb600 and as a infrared remote

The Nikon D80's shutter can be released via handheld "IR" or infrared remote. You can buy them online or in most camera shops. The Nikon branded one will cost the most, but really doesn't perform a whole lot better than the $5 third party versions. The nice thing about IR remotes is that only a transmitter is needed. There's a built in IR receiver on the front of the camera body, and as long as it is not obstructed - or too far from the transmitter, it will work fine.

The SB600 will fire if setup to work correctly when the shutter is released "normally" - triggering with a IR remote will not affect the SB600 flash whether mounted on the camera or if in "commander mode". The D80 manual has details on pg 38 to operate in both the instant and time delayed IR operation modes and should be consulted as Nikon does not allow copy and paste from the manual - and they make use of graphics for button functions.

When distances are too great for the IR remote, you'll need to go the route of an RF or radio frequency remote instead. Many of these will work at distance up to and even beyond 100 yards. They consist of a transmitter and receiver. The receiver can be mounted on the hot shoe of the camera or tethered via cable to the camera body. This is not the question you asked about, so I won't go into further detail - but only mention it as another way of doing the same thing from greater distances or when you can not be in front of the camera to access the IR receiver on the D80 body.

D90-Sb600 help

The on-camera flash has to flash if you want it to be in commander mode. That's how it sends commands to slave flashes. Set to "--", that's all it does, the flash will not affect the picture.

If you want to operate remote flashes without any flash from the camera, you'll need to invest in a third-party wireless commander and triggers.

I want to know how to use the 952AF/Nik with the nikon d200 using multi flash units with the commander mode set to channel 1

The vivtar 952AF flash is not compatible with the D200 in commander mode. Only the Nikon SB600, SB-800, SB-900 will work with that camera wirelessly.

SB600 Works Erratically...

If red light on flash is blinking, flash is charging. In shooting rapidly, sometimes flash will go off even though it isnt fully charged. This can give dark shots. Flash eats batteries like crazy, best to always use fresh batteries for each shoot.

Cannot get to work right either TTL or as wireless remote

This one got me too. I assumed it wouldn't need the built-in flash if it was a wireless remote. I still want to know why this is is so. If it needs a pre-flash to set exposure, surely it can pre-flash with the remote SB600?
