Hi,
Player accepts discs, tray opens and closes with no problems. However, player will not play discs. When the tray enters the machine, it emits a number of strange sounds. There is an out of the ordinary hum, overlayed by a plastic scratching noise, lasting perhaps two or three seconds. The hum stops, then starts up again, but then the hum and scratching, while still overlaying each other and perfectly synchronous, become intermittent, as if something inside the machine were trying to focus, or adjust its position. This cycle continues for about half a minute, then the unit searches for another disc (it is a five-disc changer), and whether there are more discs loaded or not, the unit returns "NO DISC" in the display window, and none of the disc numbers in the upper left corner of the player are lit up.
Oh, and when the unit is going from one tray to another in order, a high pitched squeal can be heard from the machine. When it reverses direction (i.e. when the "disc skip" button on the remote control is pressed four times and the tray travels in the opposite direction) there is no squeal.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Nick
I have the exact same problem and do not want to have to replace the dvd player, but from what I've heard it's going to be expensive to fix any way you look at it. Try checking out http://altechllc.com/serendipity/ about the dvd player that could, perhaps it's just an inertia problem?. If you have any better solutions please post them, thanks.I have the exact same problem and do not want to have to replace the dvd player, but from what I've heard it's going to be expensive to fix any way you look at it. Tray timing is out of alignment, probably from tray being forced open or closed. Removed cover, removed screw from center of CD turntable, removed two metal clips holding sliding tray down on left side. I ejected tray assembly first and shut off power and unplugged unit
lifted left side of tray and experimented with black gear that controls
the lifting of disc and the ejecting and retracting of tray. Tried to
adjust it to the ejected position as best as possible then powered up and retracted. Next power down and upplugged. Inserted a cd anywhere, note slot # plugged in unit turned on power. Watched disc indicator led's to calibrate with slot if the numbers don't match up, power down, lift up disc turntable to disengage from gear drive near center post and turn to align disc with laser and disc pickup and drive assembly. If tray is not in correct position too align with disc pickup and laser reader assembly lift left side of tray andmove on gear to addjust.

install the newest vlc player. copy and paste the line below into the url box: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html
when installing, click on all the file types and install, and it should play the dvd. i personally would uninstall powerdvd as well, cos vlc plays just about anything i throw at it. good luck chris
Switch player on and make sure there is no disc in the tray. CLose tray and press menu,1,9.
A menu should appear with the region option at about the third line from the bottom. Press enter and enter the region you want("0" for free zone) . Next press open/close.
i would say for some reason your dvd player is not compatible from now on with that brand of blank dvd!
get the firmware update from the brand website all you do is download the file burnit on a cd and put it in the dvd player should fix most and eventual problems
looks like the tray is offline so basiclly its not reading the first disc because its far away from the eye so by putting another disc in and it reads it because the eye is close enough to read it . u may have to open the player up to get the first disc out. good luck.
I have the same exact issue. Well, I guess the sounds are not as described, but same chain of events.
Was there ever a solution offered? Did you ever figure this out?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Same problem, no squeal.
I have the exact same problem and do not want to have to replace the dvd player, but from what I've heard it's going to be expensive to fix any way you look at it.
