SOURCE: Back-up valve is not working properly. Can I take

With these pool cleaners, if they are not backing up, there are several things that you could try. Lift the valve out of the water and watch the jet. It should be going on and off. If it is not, you will need to replace the back up valve. If it appears to be working properly, try adjusting your wheel RPM.

If your pool cleaners not making proper cleaning patterns on the pool floor or turning it tight circles, try checking your RPM and adjusting your thrust jets. If the RPM is higher than 32, you will need to decrease the water flow. Also, make sure that your feed hose is floating and is not becoming tangled. Finally, check the filter bag, if full it can weigh the cleaner down on one side.

3900 goes round circles and stays in deep end

I had the issue of Polaris 3900 going in circles and staying on the deep end for a while before I figured out the problem.
In some cases the lone wheel connected directly to the gearbox turns faster than the wheels connected to the chain causing it to veer right because of slippage.

When this happens check to see if the chain is secure. It should be tight enough so that the tensioner does not touch the wheel sprocket. In my case I had to remove some 6 links from the chain and once I did this it started working well.

When you disassemble the unit you will see a sticker with a diagram of the drive chain on the feedpipe. Check that the angle of the tensioner is consistent with the diagram so that it does not touch the sprocket.

20 month old 3900 Polaris, Drive chain keeps slipping off of toothed sprocket. No teeth missing on sprocket. How do I keep chain from coming off?

Check the float on the back of the machine. Mine was full of water. As soon as I replaced it , everything ran perfectly again.

I tried every possible 'obvious' solution, from new wheel bearings to a new chain tensioner-thingie. You will notice that there is actually relatively little room for the chain to slip off the drive gear.

Seems that this additional weight a) turns the float into a sink and b) provides enough drag to force chain slippage.

After replacing the float, everything runs perfectly again. Of course, our friends at Polaris have now decided that you cannot simply buy a new float. You have to buy the ENTIRE BACK, paying 90 bucks for something that should cost no more than 10 - 15! Scoundrels.
