Side by Side Refrigerator Always dispenses crushed ice regardless of setting

Hello all, I have a GE TFX28FBDA model refrigerator, ~10 yrs old. It only dispenses crushed ice even if the setting is for ice cubes. I opened the freezer door and removed the tray. It took a few minutes but I noticed that that there is a long metal rod that runs from the front of the ice tray to the rear which needs to be engaged for the ice to bypass the ice crushing blades. I have done some research online and found that there is a solenoid which engages this bar when the cubed ice option is chosen. The hole where this metal bar fits in the back of the refrigerator has ice coming out of it (not a lot but enough to surround the plastic piece). I chipped the ice away and the solenoid began to work (I held the door button down making it think the door was closed). I saw the solenoid engage. I placed the ice tray back in the freezer and I GOT ICE CUBES to come out instead of crushed ice. I thought it was fixed. The problem is that the plastic piece that engages the metal rod was again "frozen" and not engaging the next morning. Can someone tell me if there might be a solution to this icing problem? Does the refrigerator just need to be defrosted? Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You need a new defrost heater strip.

Just jam that solenoid thing on top of that white piece in the back and the cubes should stay on cubed

I have the same problem. I had a service guy replacer the solenoid and still no cubes. He thinks i need a new circuit board. The other main problem I have is the fan behind the panels in the freezer half has ice build up and make a loud noise till i manually defrost the freezer. Ive done this every 4- 7 days for the past month and the ice still comes back. Any ideas??

I know it will be a pain but take it apart again and lube the metal shaft in the solenoid and the plastic slide with petrolium jelly, that should keep it from freezing up. It's what we do...

GE PSS25MGMA Crushed ice only, nothing else will select on panel.

Yes , replace the main board . Part number WR55X10656 . There is only partial communication between the main board and the dispensor board . This main board , is behind the 8 " X 10 " panel , on the back of the refrig . Do not replace the dispensor board . I have never come across a bad dispensor board yet . Always a first time though .

Our GE Monogram Icemaker will only dispense crushed ice

You have a solenoid switch which switches the dispenser back and forth from crushed to cube. It could be stuck or not working or the parts connecting it could be disconnected or broken. You will have to observe to see if any parts are moving and if any noise is coming from the solenoid
Remove the dispenser cover by gently prying starting at the bottom going round and round a little at a time to prevent from breaking it. When it's off the screws will be exposed to access the other components

Ice maker dispenses crushed ice in the cube setting. Water and crushed ice are fine.

Typical of a switch failure / control module failure so it sticks on the crushed ice setting or the crushing mechanism is u/s and wont turn off. Call a service engineer asap.

My water dispenser suddenly has stopped working.

Yes, it could be the water filter. Also check to make sure the water is turned on and that any lines to the refrigerator aren't kinked or crushed somewhere. It's also possible that you will not be making any ice as well if your appliance has an ice maker
