The only way I see that happen is when you're not using a pad holder underneath the pads?! If the coffee pad is exposed to hot water, it *will* produce coffee - unless the water manages to flow alongside the pad rather than through. I can only imagine that if there's no pad holder used . .

replacement parts are hard to come by but the portion unit can be bought on amazon.
My filter was metal, so I'm not sure about something cracking...
ebay has many people selling broken units... good for parts...
