Am the proud owner of an HP Laserjet4+ and (up to now) it's been working fine. However (now) when I print, the printing contrast is very light (grey looking). I've checked the toner cartridge, it's okay (not low) and (also) tried a brand new cartridge - no difference!
I've double checked the printer's settings (via the internal facilities) in case the settings may have been altered without my knowledge, but to no avail.
Note! the print clarity is not affected, I.e. there's no smudging or marks on the paper, just light print contrast.
I know it's not the software, as the problem exists when I use the (on board) self test facility. One thing, the machine was turned off for a long while (8 weeks) for safety reasons as the office wasn't being used.
Any ideas? Please advise
Thanks and regards

Re: Poor print resolution.
Ok, here is the list of things the typical user can check:
-Toner supply could be low, even a new cartridge could cause this if it was a refill job, third party or very old.
-Print density is set too low, change via the printers menu.
-EconoMode is turned on, turn off via the printers menu.
-The papers moisture, conductivity or surface finish may not meet specs, try a higher quality paper or a fresh ream.
-High voltage connecter to the toner cartridge is not making good contact. Make sure the sprint contacts that connect the printer to the cartridge are making good contact and are clean.
Here are the things to check that would require spare parts and are not for the typical user:
-Transfer roller is defective or installed incorrectly.
-Laser/Scanner is defective.
-DC controller is defective.

If Hp does not have a drivr to support it then you are out of luck unless you find someone that hacked drivers to work with it. If they have Windows Vista drivers, you can try those but they are not goign to guarantee to work.
not all equipment from Xp works with vista or 7. Xp is not the same OS or even same breed as Vista/7
MP LOAD, PC LOAD, or LC LOAD paper size,or envelope size The printer received a request for a paper or envelope size not available in the printer. MP LOAD: Load MP Tray with the requested media. If the size is not selected in the printer control panel, use the [MP[Paper[Size] key to enter the requested size, or press [Shift] + [Continue] to draw the requested size from another source, if available. Note: If MP LOAD remains in the display, you may have to clear the buffer by resetting the printer. Press [Shift] + [Reset].
Go to Start > printers and faxes> right click on the laserjet4 icon>
properties > click on printing preferences on the first page > click advance on the next page > under Graphics, you will see print quality. Change it to either 600x600 or 1200x1200. The higher the number, the darker the print. If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it. Thanks, Joe
