DLP TV starts to loose picture after 1 - 1/2 hours of use

I turn the TV on and after an hour or so the picture starts to flicker .... then it gets worse and the picture jumps around. Turn the TV off, then back on and all is good .... but 30 - 45 minutes, problem returns.

TV is a Samsung DLP HLN5065W

We call it strobbing. After about 20 minutes, the picture starts to blink. After we turn it off for awhile, we can turn it back on to watch it for another 20 minutes.

I can tell you this...I am not a tech but do have some knowledge through trial and error. I have a Toshiba 50HM67 DLP TV and my screen was flickering real bad and the picture was horrible (orange and purple blotches everywhere on screen. The yellow lamp light continued to flash so I purchased a new bulb which helped for the first initial hour or two after installing. The TV began to flicker even worse and even on bright lamp the issues returned. I then decided that I would open her up and do a deep clean of all lenses and ballast components. Wearing latex gloves (to prevent oils on your hand from getting onto components) ad taking pictures s I disassembled the light engine, I got to the color wheel only to find that it was beyond filthy. Note that I purchased this TV in 2007 and here it is 2014. Need less to say, I used some rubbing alcohol, Q-tips, dust off, vacuum, and a clean static-free cloth and now the picture looks like the day I got it. Even after installing the new lamp the yellow light kept flashing. After cleaning everything off and out, no more flashing yellow and no issues what so ever. Just be careful when removing the color wheel as mine what about as big as a half dollar. Hope this helps and feel free to send me a question anytime!

This tv has a 3 board video path. Analog main pcb --->Digital main pcb --->DMD pcb. see which inputs have the problem to narrow it down. if only some inputs, suspect analog board. if everything flickers(all inputs and menu), suspect the dmd or engine. you can see the lamp shine out the back. if the lamp is flickering, suspect lamp or ballast.

How long do bulbs generally last?

Generally, a DLP bulb lasts about 8,000 hours (if a TV is on 10 hours a day, every day, the bulb will last about two years). A bulb can last longer if it's used less frequently. Typically, a bulb in a DLP TV for household use should last at least three to four years before it starts to flicker and needs to be replaced.

Thanks!

My samsung dlp lost it's color and the picture is flickering and breaking up sound is fine It's also making a louder humming sound than usual. what is the problem

It sounds like the color wheel has failed and will need to be replaced. Color wheel will cost around $175.00-$200.00 plus 1-1.5 hours labor. You can call 1-800-samsung for the nearest service center.

Flickering screen, loud buzzing sound, self boot down.

Color wheel bad. Makes rumbling sound. Bad bearings. Has to spin about 10,000 RPMs and sync to DLP chip. Here: https://www.encompassparts.com/webwiz/wwiz.asp?wwizmstr=WEB.SEE&partnumber=5933777&smodel=HLR5067WX/XAA

Noise from Samsung rear projection DLP HD TV.

this noise is an indication of a bad color wheel. aa dlp uses a mechanical motor to spin a coloered segment disk. this turn the white light of the lamp into your colors of pictures. Now anything that moves will eventally break. the flickering is also an indication of a color wheel going bad. eventally this will cause the set to shut down. Color wheels can be replaced. i dont know your model so i am not sure of the exact replacement procedure. at my shop we charge average 250 for such a repair
