Xbox 360 starts up randomly, tray opens and closes spontenaously

Hi,

My xbox 360 starts up sponteanously. When it's on the the dvd tray opens and closes continously. What can cause this problem?

    No,
I didn't open it. strange isn't it? There's actually no problem with reading the disk. It just reads the disk and launches the game if it has the chance(i mean when the tray didn't go open and close in the meantime)

wow thanks! , for putting all this effort to my question.

As fot the spontaneous switching ON (only On, no spontaneous off switching), it seems that Xbox360 in general can be powered on also by pushing the tray eject button. That's why i think the problem concentrates on something that has to do with the tray, maybe as you say, that something is blocking the rail. I saw another problem very much like my problem on this forum. The given solution for that problem was to open up the Xbox 360 and get to open the dvd drive, in the spindle where the game rest in the middle of your spindle you will normally find two magnets. They might have come off. He suggest to superglue them again and the problem should be fixed.
What do you suggest, should i try this?

I have this exact same problem and I also have another xbox 360 so I swapped the DVD Drives and that still hasn't fixed it. It's not the DVD drive that's the problem it's something else. Any Help?!?

I have the same Problem my X box came on spontaniously and the DVD tray opens and closes non stop till I get the RROD code. it will play games and DVDs only if it stays closed long enough to start then it opens up and starts the cycle all over. I opned up the DVD drive and can't see any thing blocking any thing I even used a Q tip to pit a little oil on the screw meckanisim that opens the drive and blue it out with compressed air. and it did not fix the problem I am going to have to buy a new drive my Drive is a Philips drive.

Have you opened the Xbox and tried to fix something?

  • Anonymous Nov 21, 2008

Have you tried getting some compressed air and blowing out the DVD drive? Maybe something is blocking the rails or the gears and its forcing itself to open/close. As for the spontaneous ON/OFF, I have no clue. I'm a technician at Play-N-Trade in Spring, Texas, and I'm asking around at our other stores if they have seen the problem. Sit tight and I'll try and help out your situation.

Only if your Xbox is out of warranty would I suggest that. I would try that and then post your results when your finished.

Not playing game just say open tray

Hi, this is a pretty common problem for the xbox 360's. It is caused from the laser either becoming dirty or the laser is starting to burn out. The first thing I would try to do is open the disc tray and then unplug your 360. Then try taking some canned air or an air compressor and blow it into the DVD drive to clean off any debris from the laser. Plug it back in and try to load a disc. If you still get the open tray error, then your laser is starting to burn out and is in need of replacement. The xbox 360 uses the laser to determine whether the tray is open or closed, unlike the PS2 or PS3 which relies on switch. So, if it becomes dirty or burned out it can't read if the tray is open or closed.

My xbox 360 sounds ill

Strangely enough inside any of those game boxes is a simple DVD reader driver like for a PC.

It can be replaced.

First I would try cleaning it with a spray air electronic cleaner or any sort of DVD reader cleaner.

Dust will accumulate in them even with the little door that covers it when closed.

If that's not the case, the sensor can also be cleaned with alcohol and a q-tip if you take off the case or the motor may be going bad ont he DVD drive itself.

Start with the basics.

Opening/closing game, not very fun.

looks like your switch is jamed or fried, or you installed a modchip incorrectly. If you still are in the return/exchange period, exchange it
