If you want to play a DVD disc on your computer, try downloading a dvd player program to play the DVD. Windows Media Player is not a DVD player and it is a video player. There are some free DVD player programs that you can try on your PC, such as Leawo Blu-ray Player, POT Player, 5k Player, BlazeDVD, etc.

Maybe your screen resolution needs to be higher? What type of error message are you getting? Are these dvd's that you were able to play before?

Most computers will have problems playing dvd's that someone made for you on their computer. Try a store purchased dvd and see if it plays.

You can always reinstall windows media player at Microsoft's site below.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/windows-media-player

You can also try the VLC Player. It comes with drivers and codec. I've seen it solve a lot of issues that Media Player could not fix.

Try using VLC as your player. Go to www.google.com and in the search box type "download vlc" (without the quotes). Look for the Video Lan download from site www.videolan.org/vlc Download and install it. It downloads and installs in 3 minutes or so. It's a very fast player, smooth and it can play just about any type of dvd formats and media. It's totally FREE.

  • You can copy and paste the link above for windows media player or you can click the link below for Microsoft's site to download it.

Dvd medie player

It seems you don't have any codecs... The problem is not in windows media player.
Just install a codec pack like http://www.free-codecs.com/download/codec_pack_all_in_1.htm

Hope to solve your problem.

Why is it that sometimes I can watch DVDs on Windows Media Player and sometimes not?

Some movies are encoded with a protection the Disc acts as if you are tempting to copy the write protected dvd. you can get a program for free called shrink dvd that will remove the protection and copy the movie to your Pc so you can watch it.

Media player not play because code not support

Download and install this it will allow almost all media to play in your windows media player.

http://download.cnet.com/K-Lite-Codec-Pack-Full/3000-13632_4-64246.html?tag=mncol;2

Or you could download VLC media player, it plays everything.

http://download.cnet.com/VLC-Media-Player/3000-13632_4-10267151.html?tag=mncol;1

Personally I would stick with the windows media player, just because it's half a part of windows, & it's what I've always used. Or if you have a zune, or xbox windows media player is needed.

No sound when playing dvds

This is very likely a codec problem. A codec is a software component used with video and audio players that translates the electronic media file into something that can be displayed. Most of the time, the video codec will be out of date and you'll hear the audio but not see any video. You've got the reverse problem, obviously.

Unfortunately, Microsoft does not make this easy. Even the latest download of codecs from Microsoft doesn't necessarily update the Windows Media Player to play any DVD. You will need to do a codec search and download the latest. Last time I checked, 'download.com' had them available (this is CNet's download website). Good luck!
