Check if your printer is up to date. Just go to http://bit.ly/ghfW8H to download the firmware update.

Also, make sure that you're using genuine Lexmark cartridges. If there's an error message on your screen that your black ink is low even if you replaced it, you won't be able to print or scan. It will send a busy signal or communication not available to your computer. If this is the case, replace the cartridge.

If it still doesn't work work, try to reinstall the software: http://bit.ly/d3ftso

Black ink will not print

Have you tried setting the color to black cartridge only. You may be printing the black with a combination of colored inks. I occasionally have a similar problem. Sometimes I can get the black to work by taking a paper towel dampened with distilled water and holding it against the cartridge print head until I see black ink coming out. Replace the cartridge and try printing again. If this doesn't work try a new cartridge and run through your Printer Settings, making sure they are all set properly.

Cannon Pixma MP780 won't print. Just replaced black ink cartridge, do I have to replace all of them for it to print

Not normally but the black print head nozzles maybe blocked.
Inkjet printers need to be used frequently to prevent ink drying out and blocking the print head nozzles.
If the print head cleaning maintenance routine does not clear the blockages, then print head needs replacing, but it may be expensive.
It may be more cost effective to buy a later model and better printer than replace the print head.

My printer does not appear to be printing from the black cartridge. I have tried via the maintenance to clean the heads, but when I print it continues to not print. I have also replaced the cartridges.

Hi

Please try this solution

A hard reset of the printer may clear the error. Here is how to perform the hard reset:
1.Shut down the computer.
2.Open the top cover of the printer and remove the print cartridges.
3.Close the top cover of the printer.
4.Press the power button on the printer to turn the printer off.
5.Disconnect the communications, (USB or Parallel), cable from the back of the printer.
6.Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer for one minute.
7.Reconnect the communications cable to the printer.
8.Reconnect the power cable to the printer.
9.Press the printer power button to turn the printer on.
10.Open the top cover and reinsert the print cartridges.
11.Close the top cover and print the calibration page.
12.Restart the computer. If not working, try to clean the ink head manual by removing the cartridge and rub the ink head to a plain paper with alcohol until ink flows on the cartridges and then run the print nozzle or print alignment page. Error code 0xc19a0023

I went crazy trying to fix my HP D7560, days and days of print ink failure, unable to align cartridges, until to clean print heads. My symptom is that the black ink started to print only in a light gray. I tried everything from running Tools, changing to new cartridges, even buying a new print head (which was not genuine HP, they don't make them anymore, and the new print head would'n't complete in diagnostics without error). I love this printer and didn't want to part with it. So I searched for days and tried many solutions without success. Until I found this one last solution - it my last ditch effort. The solution is to get a bowl of very hot water (not boiling), remove the print head from the printer and place the print head directly in the hot water (sounds risky! but I did it). I watched as the bowl filled with black ink. The instructions said to let it sit for 5-10 minutes, but I couldnt' believe the amount of ink that poured out of the print head. So, I kept replacing the water and shaking the print head carefully in the water to loosen the trapped ink. I repeated this step (replacing water) until it was no longer producing black cloud of ink and water was fairly clear. I carefully dried the print head with a paper towel, let sit for approx 5 minutes to dry some more, shook it vigorously a few times to shake out any water, and then lastly hit it with a blast of compressed air to ensure all water droplets were gone. I put the print head back in, re-inserted the cartridges and the printer ran through diagnostics automatically - aligning cartridges and printing a test page - it was BEAUTIFUL!!!! Until I tried this, nothing worked. I'm hoping this solution will help others. Good luck.

My black ink ran out so I replaced the ink

Hi:
I have used the printer series that you have for years, and once in awhile, I get a new cartridge that won't immediately print. Often, there is just a bit of dried ink residue on the print head, and that won't allow the cartridge to work correctly.

Some simple things to try are :

1) Remove the black cartridge. and take a damp paper towel and gently swab the print head area. Next, apply some pressure to the sides of the black cartridge, until you see black ink oozing out of the print head. Repeat if needed. Once the ink starts flowing, blot off the excess, and install the cartridge.

If you can't get ink to flow, then the cartridge might be bad. Most of them have an expiration date on the packaging.

Have changed the black ink in the printer as it was displaying error code 4. It is now displaying error code 5! What does this mean. What should I do?

Hi there,
Error E5.
Cause : The FINE Cartridge may not be installed properly or the Cartridge may not be the compatible with the machine.
Action : Install the appropriate FINE Cartridge. If the lines are misaligned or the resulting output is not satisfactory, carry out the FINE cartridge Alignment.

Replacing A FINE Cartridge.
When replacing a FINE Cartridge, check the model number very carefully.

The machine will not print properly if the wrong FINE Cartridge is used, or installed incorrectly.

Black : PG-40 Black
Color : CL-41 Color

The FINE Cartridge PG-50 Black (High-Yield) and CL-51 Color (High Yield) are also compatible with this machine.

Replacing A FINE Cartridge
When a FINE Cartridge runs out of ink, replace it using the following steps.
1) Ensure that the machine is turned ON, and then open the Scanning Unit. The FINE Cartridge Holder moves to the left.
Pull the Scanning Unit Support down into place.

2) Remove the empty FINE Cartridge.
a) Push the FINE Cartridge carefully to avoid staining your clothes or the surrounding work area.
b) Remove the FINE Cartridge.
Important : * Handle FINE Cartridges carefullu to avoid staining your clothes or the surrounding work area.
*Discard empty FINE Cartridges according to local laws and disposal regulations.
Caution : Do not touch the transparent film, film cable, ink absorber (sponge part) or any metal parts.

3) Prepare a replacement FINE Cartridge.
Unpack a new FINE Cartridge and remove the Protective Tape.
Important : * Do not reattach the Protective Tape once you have removed it,
* Handle the removed Protective Tape carefully to avoid getting your hands dirty or staining the surrounding work area once you have removed it.
* Once the Protective Tape is removed, do not touch the gold terminals of the FINE Cartridge or its nozzles. The machine may not print out properly if you touch the terminals.

4) Insert the new FINE Cartridge.
Black FINE Cartridge should be installed into the left holder and Color FINE Cartridge should go into the right holder.
a) Insert a new FINE Cartridge on a slight tilt.
b) Push the FINE Cartridge up until it clicks into place.

5) Close the Scanning Unit.
Lift the Scanning Unit slightly and put the Scanning Unit Support back to its original position,
Then close the Scanning Unit.
The FINE Cartridge Holder moves to the right.
Note : IF the straight line is misaligned or the FINE Cartridge position is misaligned, align the FINE Cartridge position.
Important :
* To maintain optimal print quality, we recommend that you use Canon brand FINE Cartridge. Replenishing ink only is also not recommended.
* Replace the FINE Cartridge runs out of ink, replace the FINE Cartridge with a new one immediately. If you replace it with the FINE Cartridge that has previously been removed, the machine may not print properly due to clogged FINE Cartridge nozzles. Furthermore, the Low Ink Warning dialog box which advices when to exchange the FINE Cartridge will be inaccurate.
* To maintain optimal print quality, use up all the ink in the FINE Cartridge within six months of its first use. (We recommend that you note the date that the FINE Cartridge was installed in the machine.)
* Color ink consumption may occur even when black-and- white or gray-scale printing specified.
Color ink is consumed during Cartridge cleaning, which is necessary to maintain the machine's capabilities.

Aligning The FINE Cartridge
If ruled lines are misaligned or a printout is unsatisfactory, FINE Cartridge Alignment is required,

* Aligning the FINE Cartridge
1) Press [Maintainance] repeatedly until <P> appears.

2) Press [Black] or [Color].
The machine prints the head alignment sheet.

3) Beginning from Column A on the printout, enter checkmarks in the patterns that have the most solid image.

4) Load the checked sheet on the Platen Glass.
When loading the checked sheet, place the front side down, and align the upper left corner of the sheet with the alignment mark on the lower right corner of the Platen Glass.

5) Press [Maintainance] repeatedly until <U> appears.

6) Press [Black] or [Color].
The machine scans the pattern and aligns the FINE Cartridge automatically.
Note : If you select <L> in step 1, the machine prints the current FINE Cartridge Alignment setting.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.
Have a good day.

Alignment failed refer to device documentation hp L7780

You need to remove the black/yellow printhead and dab it on a damp paper towel until you see a solid line of black ink on the towel when you press it. It won't pass the alignment until all colors work properly.

Cannot recognize ink cartridge

I had the same problem. I was using original brand cartridges and it was still not working. Here's how I got it to work. I recommend doing each step and then trying to print a test page to see if it is working.

1. I used a Q-tip with Isopropyl Alcohol and cleaned the gold contacts on both the cartridge and the mating contacts in the printer.

2. Then from the Setup Menu, I found a menu called Tools. From there I ran "Align Print Cartridges".

3. From the same menu I also ran "Clean Print Cartridges"

4. I then ran a few test prints by going into the Setup Menu and then choosing "Print Report" and then selecting "Self-Test Report". It prints grid patterns in black & white as well as magenta, yellow and blue. The black grid pattern had some missing lines until I printed this report a few times.

5. I made a few photocopies and now the printouts no longer have large stripes of missing ink as it did in the earlier steps.

Good luck. Hope this helps.
