Question about Tomtom ONE GPS Receiver
Our TomTom has been working fine for the past four months. However, last week I arrived at a destination and when I was ready to return home, the GPS would not turn on. When I have it plugged into the car, the green light at the top next to the on/off button is illuminated, but there is nothing on the screen. I've tried the reset button, but that did not work. I'm hoping there's an easier solution than sending it in for repairs which could take weeks. Any ideas? Could it be the battery? Thanks!
Amazing what reading through the support page at TOMTOM reveals... I have the XL so no SD card to remove, but the support page explains that a hard reset by holding the power button takes 15 SECONDS. That's actually a really long time if you watch a clock. I pressed it and waited it out, and it worked. Powered right up. Not sure if I lost all my favorites and stuff but I have them backed up using TomTom Home anyway....

I have managed to fix my TomTom one.
The problem was two fold. First the diode D8 was blown and also the power supply chip was blown.
It is a tricky job, using surface mounted components so should not be attempted by a novice but I managed it.
I have a full set of photos etc if anyone cares to try it. I figured - NOTHING to loose!! so what the heck and just went for it. Taking it apart was fun! The surface mounted IC was easy to obtain and the total cost was about £10 plus 4 hours panic labour. If anyone wants the info just let me know and I will send the photos - but no promises - it worked for me.

My Tomtom One version 1 (purchased in Jluy 2007) has had the problem of going blank on three occasions now. Recharging in car or via the mains charger for several hours does not solve the problem. Holding down the switch firmly for brief or long periods ahcieves nothing. I recalled hearing that freezing (literally) some electronic equipment can sove such problems and had already successfully brought a digital alarm clock back to life by putting it in the freezer. So with my Tomtom out of guarantee I wrapped it in a couple of plastic bags and put it in the deep freeze compartment of a rifrigerator over night. Next day tokk it out, allowed a couple of hours to thaw out and then recharged for an hour before switching on. Instant revival! I have now repeated this treatment on three occasions when the unit packed in and each time it has worked perfectly. Of course the Tomtom handbook warns that the untit must not be exposed to extremes of high or low temperature; but I assure you my treatment worked.

I figured out this ongoing problem. I purchased my TomTom One second edition 1/20/07 for $395. I was 30 days past my warranty and had the problem of unit not turning on. Green light came on when charged.
I opened my unit up and found the sw2 micro switch broken. If you press too hard on the on/off button, this will eventually happen.
I couldn't find a replacement switch so I wired my own switch and it works now.

Ok...I have had this problem with my GO 510. My solution has been to take the smart card out. Hit the reset button, plug it back in, hold down the "on" button, and it usually turns back on. Then I put the smart card back in.
Hope it works for you.

Hey everyone, I'm having the same problem. Here's my story though, I have a TomTom One 3rd edition, so no SD card. I bought it and received it. Plugged it into the wall using my BlackBerry charger, charged it up worked fine. Was driving in the car with it worked great, battery started to get low, so I plugged the TomTom car charger into the car and then into the TomTom while it was on. The unit immediately shut off and wouldn't come back on. The green light would come on, but plugging it into the wall or computer did nothing. Called TomTom sent it back got a replacement. Drove a few hours with it plugged into the car using my BlackBerry charger incase the TomTom one was faulty. Worked for one day. Next day battery was low so I plugged it into the car while it was on, and boom died again. Was so mad I threw it in my desk at work and left it there for a few weeks. Finally called TomTom to get it replaced, and for fun while I was on the phone I plugged it into my Blackberry charger, hit power and it immediately turned on! Felt so stupid so figured it wasn't dead. Went to my car, plugged it into the car charger while it was OFF incase having it on caused the problem even though TomTom said it wouldn't. Surprise surprise, unit wouldn't turn on and it's now dead again. I don't understand how it could just come on after 3 weeks being dead in my drawer at work, so can't be a blown component. Going to try someones freezer trick tonight since I'm at a loss, but getting really sick of this thing. Happened both times in the same car, but different chargers. I charge my BlackBerry all the time though works fine, so I don't think my car is doing it, really have no idea...

Had this problem after upgradeing software and maps, it would only turn on if i removed sd card, then powered on, then put back in sd card. Resolution was to put card in pc, delete trashes folder, then whilst the card it out of the tom tom, hard reset it by putting pin in hole by card slot, whilst holding power button - then i put card back in when it came on - no problems now - Hope this helps

Take out the SD card and pop it into a card reader. Do not run the Tomtom home software, just open the card to browse files.
Remove (or backup) the folder ".Trashes" then stop the card, remove, replace into the tomtom and after it re-boots, turn off and on, and hey presto, it should all be back to normal!
Worked for me anyway!

I bought a Tomtom ONE XL not working for ten dollars and I found the problem I opened this one up and found the power switch is broken the thing is now the soldering it bck in place can be done with a magnifing glass and plenty of light. So next time you power it up just lightly press the power button the switch itself is very fragile.

Are you guys by any chance using a Mac? I ask because mine had the exact same problem after I ran the first update from my macBook. I couldn't turn it on, unless I popped the sd card out and back again. But when I connected to an Windows machine, I saw some special mac folders like .Trash and things like that, if you use a mac, you know what I mean. I removed those and it started working properly again. Let me know if it helps.

I had the same problem after I upgraded to the latest software version from the website. I find that popping the SD card out and then back in gets the power to come on, but you have to do it every time. Working for now.

Usually in such case the problem is in voltage converter chips inside tomtom, TPS62000 and LTC3411, they needs replacing.

I had the SD card problem as well with ver 7.162 as solution #4.
difference is mine was connected to a linux comp....
I think that's the problem! Well spotted, these folders keep the tomtom from booting.
Ironically, Ithink the TT OS is some kind of linux !!

SOURCE: GPS Won't Turn On
dude check it the car charger really isnt a chargers. what! i kno i kno. the '' proper" way of chargin ur battery is thru the computer or u can purchase a a/c to usb adapter and charge it on the wall but the car charger is a trickle charge as long as the green light is coming on that means that there is power going to it and support is going to just tell ur charge the batter the right way over and over again try charging on the computer for about four hrs then see whats up if its still not working then call tech support and make sure u tell them that u tried charging it on the computer for four hrs
