Question about Frigidaire FRT21H8 Top Freezer Refrigerator
My fridge was sitting outside in garage. The freezer stopped working and the dealer said it was due to outside temperature dropping too low. "Fridge is designed to shut down when temps drop". Freezer is top load and that was the only thing that failed. Frigidaire. Is this true?
Top mount refrigerator installed in a garage and the food in the freezer is defrosting when
the temperature in the garage goes below 55 degrees fahrenheit.
On top mount refrigerators you cycle the compressor and fan/fans from the food
compartment temperature. When the room temperature gets colder than 55 F, you have
long off times waiting for the food compartment to warm enough to trip the cold control.
This long off time is allowing the freezer temperature to get high enough that food can start
There is a kit for refrigerators installed in applications where the temperature can go as low
as 34 F and still maintain good freezer temperatures. The kit part number is 5303918301
and it contains a heater that mounts in the control box and an instruction sheet advising
how to install the heater.
Kit 5303918301 contains:
Part # 5303950194 Instruction sheet
Part # 241532101 Heater

First off take a look at your user manual on page 3, installation page. Read about the garage kits. What is happening is that when you put a top mount fridge in a area below 55 degrees the compressor malfunctions. The compressor cuts on to cool the fridge down. If you have the appliance in unheated garage what happens is the compressor doesnt cut on as often because it thinks that the temp outside the fridge is the temp inside the fridge. In order to fix this problem you need a garage kit which regulates when the compressor cuts on and off by heating the sensor located inside the fridge section next to the defrost heater. In order to get this for a frigidaire appliance you would need to get it from their website www.frigidaire.com.
