Toshiba/ 42H81 / hyper board

It started having a wavy picture when first turned on; after about 10 minutes the picture would be fine. But it's gotten worse over time. It displays wavy horizontal lines all over the screen and it also flickers it’s so bad where you can’t watch anything on the TV anymore. After researching I heard it could be my hyper board or the STK392-110 convegence chips and 1.8ohm. Not sure what all that means but would love to fix my TV. Is it fixable for not a lot.

You can either yrplace your Hyper board, or replace all the serfice mount capacitors in it. The cap replacement fixes this 90% of the time.

The hyperboard solution by premtech worked perfectly. FYI, the board can be refurbished on your own, provided you are able to handle soldering small surface mount components.

Tom,
I'll send the svc manual directly following this post, but as a word of caution be EXTREMELY careful removing the smd caps. You can easily damage the traces and make the module useless.

Picture is wavy then fine, happens every two minutes

This model like several others had problems with what is called a Hyper board inside which processes all signal inside the set.

From a Toshiba service bulletin:

No: PJTV200503 2 Pages Ref: WU032505
Product: Projection TV Date: 3/25/05
Models: 42H81,43HX71, 43H71, 50HX81, 50H71, 50H81, 53HX71, 53H71, 57HX81, 57H81, 61H71, 65HX81 AND 65H81
Product Safety Precautions:
Product Safety Precautions are described in the Toshiba service manual(s) for models covered in this bulletin. All safety precautions and checks shall be complied with before returning the equipment to the customer. Servicers who defeat safety features or fail to perform safety checks may-be liable for any resulting damages and may expose themselves and others to possible injury.
Application: The information contained in this bulletin applies only if you encounter the symptom(s) listed below.
Subject: MVPU13 Hyper Module Repair (23786198 / 23148017X)
Symptom: Multiple Symptoms may be experienced depending on which capacitor is faulty. The primary symptoms are jagged, digitized or pie crusting of the picture. The set may also be described with a poor sync condition.
Corrective Action: Remove the MVUP13 Hyper Module from the TV chassis, remove the top shield and replace the 10uf, 16v capacitors using Part Number 24619040 as shown in Figure 1. It's recommended that all of the capacitors identified in Figure 1 be replaced. (Note: These capacitors are low impedance surface mounted aluminum electrolytic capacitors. Care should be taken to avoid damaging the PCB while replacing these capacitors.)

There are several surface mounted capacitors that dry out with age and usually the problem starts out when first turned on and then eventually after on a long enough time the set works--the time will get longer as the problem gets worse.

The board is no longer available and only two options here: locate and replace all the selected caps which is not a do it yourself job or remove the board and send it out for rebuild.

Let me know if you need more info as I have seen dozens of these sets with this kind of problem.

Toshiba 61 inch rear projection scrambled picture for 10 minutes after power on, then clears up.

If you are seeing lines and or noise for the first several minutes and it goes away--I think I know what the problem is.

Has the period of time before it clears up been getting longer and longer?

Reply to me with the exact model number and I will tell you what is wrong and what has to be done to fix it.

A lot of these sets have problems with what is called a HYPER board----it controls all signal inside the set--confirm Toshiba and exact model number---

I am here to help people and I do this here for free.

When I turn on my 50H82 it takes 10 to 15 minutes

I just did a repair on one of these. Check your picture-on-picture. If the the secondary picture is clear, chances are very good the problem is on the "hyper board". We d not replace the hyper board - we repair it. The board is very expensive and rarely, if ever, available. There are several parts in the module that need replaced, but these are definitely not user replaceable. They are very small surface mount components and even I have lifted a copper or trace or two doing these. It is tedious work but our repair bill was well below $300. It is also something I do not do in the home and taking it to the repair facility is a money saver. I did go to the home on this one and remove the board to the shop, however they only lived a few miles away so the service call was low priced. Hope this helps...

Wavy picture

this is caused by a bad convergence module, and there are probably some dried out electrolytic caps in the circuit as well. i have one in the shop right now that came in with the same problem. if you have it serviced, make sure they replace all of the convergence modules (there are usually 2, but sometimes 3 of them), because if one went bad the other(s) is likely to go out soon as well.
