TAPPING NOISE, NOW IT WON'T GO INTO GEAR WITHOUT LOUD GRINDING NOISE AND ACTS LIKE TRANSMISSION WON'T ENGAGE TO DRIVE

I started hearing a tapping noise in the front of the car Friday. Small tapping noise, then tonight I backed out of my driveway and put it in gear to take off forward after backing out and heard a loud grinding sound. Then it would hardly gain speed, like it slipped and wouldn't go. Turned around and came back. Now it grinds when I put it into gear, especially reverse and wont' go. Will go forward but not much. Tapping and grinding horrible.

If it is an automatic transmission, first check the fluid level. If it is low, fill it up and try it again. If the level is fine, then there is a bigger issue and you should seek a professional's help.

SOURCE: loud tapping noise in engine

It sounds like you have a rod problem. If that is the case the engine will need to be taken apart to be fixed. Price varys from shop to shop but they can do a bunch of tests on it and tell you exactly what is wrong with it for about 80 to 100 dollars

SOURCE: Car won't start after loud grinding noise

had the car been running rough before hand?

It may well be a snapped con rod. Would allow the engine to turn for a while until it jams by the crankshaft.

If the car is manual it may be the clutch plate but with your foot on the clutch it shouldnt stop it.

SOURCE: My 2000 Buick LeSabre whines and will not shift

it does sound like the transmission has packed it in. you might be able to find a decent used one via a wrecking yard and get a local mechanic to install it.
try to find one out of a car with under 100K miles on it.

first of all you need to check your brakes in back if they are drum brakes the break lining has to be thicker than the metal shoe if close replace. also if they are really bad may be metal on metal of so you will need new drums/rotors. Make sure if there disk that the calipers are checked for not releasing properly you can tell by uneven pad wear if so need new break calipers. Also remove your wheel bearings in back and check if bad or questionable replace and repack with a good mollt high temp grease

you need a new reverse gear. the rest of your transmission should be fine but it will need to be rebuilt because you probably have pieces of the reverse gear floating around in it. it will eventually ruin the transmission if you don't fix it soon.

2003 Mitsubishi Montero (Not Sport) vehicle won't engage.

You most likely have a failed transmission and it will need to be removed and rebuilt or replaced with a remanufactured unit.

Car won't start but makes a grinding noise like when the car is started already

This sounds like a damaged starter drive gear and engine flywheel gear.

Sounds like you are having a problem with the starting motor. When activated, it throws out a gear to engage with the flywheel on the end of the engine. If there is not enough energy to fully engage the gear, or the gear does not engage properly due to misalignment, you may hear a grinding noise. Have the starting motor serviced or replaced.

I would guess that something inside of the transmission has failed and there is no longer a mechanical connection between the motor and the drive axles regardless of what gear you attempt to move in.[sheared splines, broken planetary, etc.] Often when this happens you won't hear any kind of noise because of the failed parts being inside the transmission case...instead the car just won't go anymore. You could have a CV drive axle joint that has failed but generally they will make some noticable rattling or grinding noise as they churn away when you try to go forward or reverse. If something has failed inside of the transmission then the transmission will need to be removed and repaired. It if is just a drive axle joint that has failed then that can be replaced without doing anything to the transmission. Hope this helps and good luck!

Won't go into gear, won't move

Sounds like the transmission.. If the axel was broke most likely it would still go into gear quite easy.. Bad axel would cause bad shimmy in front end.. Suggestion would be to take to a transmission shop and have checked out..

Won't go into gear to drive. may be transmission?

If the clutch has never been changed most likely it is that. The way you can check it is by removing the transmission and looking at the clutch disc. It could be transmission syncros but I am willing to bet you just need a new clutch.
