Mitsubishi WS-65909 65" Rear Projection Television Logo

Picture bends in different colors

My WS-65909 Diamond Series TV picture looks like a 3D with green red and other colors bending across the screen any suggestions on how to fix?

  • wdavidrankin Feb 26, 2009

My Mitsubishi WS-65909 started the same now it is one green color with only a faint image. The sound is there, but not picture. A repair person came out and told me that it needed a new mother board and the blue lamp needed replacing. He only looked at it from the front and took a peek in side. Is there any hope of me fixing it myself? Dave

Your Convergence IC chips and resistors arre failing you need to replace them

below is a general disscussion post for a Philips TV which will help you to understand your situation and what you might need usally you will need (2) IC convergence Chips and usally (12) Resisitors what have to be soldered onthe the board after you remove the old ones. this fix usally cost you to do it yourself $30, to have a repair man do it cost around $300-450 a new board if avalible usally costs $250-300

Sorry, for the bad new I hope you have a friend that knows how to work on circuit boards...
good luck,

below is a general post about a philips TV Convergence problem you can read about keep inmind your CHIP and RESISTORS will proball be different type....

you need 2 Convergence IC's STK392-120's (120's and 150's will work) of course order 2 of the same type I'm using replacement 150's they allow for a little higher heat and were cheaper ALSO you need to replace the 12 resistors with 6.8 ohm metal film resistors, make sure they are metal film! don’t skimp out here I did and then they blew and fried my IC's and I had to replace everything again!

Great reference link that I posted
pictures on, check out page 3

Where I got my parts that worked:
Suburban Electronics
http://www.suburban-elect.com/
Manual Library you should find all you need here:

What you need:
(2) STK392-120 OR STK392-150 IC
chips
(12) 6.8 Ohm Metal Film resistors
set of star screw drivers
15 watt pencil solder pencil, DO NOT use a high watt iron you will fry the surface mounted item.
good leaded solder, and flux

We have a Mitsubishi diamond seriies ws 65909, we heard a pop noise (as if a speaker had blown but we still have sounds then the TV went to a rainbowish of colors and you view the picture as if it's 2...

This model uses a single convergence chip that after age fails.

I will attach some photos of the part, and also typical convergence problems.

The repair can be a do it yourself job if someone can solder etc.

The suspect part if it is a convergence problem is a SKT393-110(ABOUT A 15 DOLLAR PART ON EBAY).

If you are able I have start to finish step by step instructions for this repair that tell you everything you will need and how to do the repair.

Look at the photos and let me know.

No two sets will look exactly the same but the photos should tell you if it is a convergence trouble or not.

3d look with little bending in bottom left corner of screen.

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2
Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

3d like picture, 3 colors bending across screen. convergence option gone from menu

There are bad solder connections on the flyback transformer and fuse #FL231 is open. Pretty hard to repair this yourself.

Text/images overlap each other in 3 colors, 3D distorted picture

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

f0900cb.jpg

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick email and they will put one together for you. Their kits includes photo instruction guides, original Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Mitsubishi ws-65909

I suspects you have bad convergance IC's

It takes a good tech around 3 or 3 hours to take the old ones out and solder in the new ones. Also, it is likely one or two resistors are burnt and will need replacing as well.
Don not run the tv till you have it fix you will cause more damage!
