Having trouble finding Undiluted white vinegar for cleaning

Stores do not carry undiluted white vinegar, where can I find it?

  • Handyman8 Jan 23, 2009

Scale builds up in my Keurig Coffee Maker (the model that makes a single cup of coffee from a coffee pod) from the minerals that are in my tap water. My model actually flashes a message that says "DESCALE". The amount of coffee it makes decreases dramatically due to the scale buildup. Trouble is the descaling instructions say to use UNDILUTED WHITE VINEGAR which I cannot find locally (Abington, MA area). When I use the 5-8% DILUTED WHITE VINEGAR, the DESCALE message appears again in a few weeks. WHERE can I find a commercial outlet for a stronger white vinegar, NOT the weak 5% blend.

  • growup Apr 14, 2009

I have the same problem with "scaly" build-up in my hot mist vaporizer. The directions say to us "undiluted vinegar"; but I can't find it. I called the vaporizer company and told them that regular distilled vinegar (used right out of the bottle with no dilution) does NOT take off the scale. They told me that I had to use undiluted vinegar, but they could not tell me where to purchase it. I have looked everywhere and can not find it. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think undilluted means don't add water to the stuff you get at store. Just straight from bottle. If it says 5% dilluted this is still ok.

Hunter Humidifier #33222

From The Hunter Manual
1. Turn the humidifier ‘OFF’ and unplug the unit.
2. Lift the main housing and remove the water dispersion tray and the PermaWick™ Filters. The motor is attached to the main housing. Do not place the motor near water. Do not use a wet towel on the motor or motor housing as electrical shock may occur.
3. The PermaWick™ Filter should be cleaned in a vinegar and water solution to remove any mineral buildup. Place in a solution of one (1) gallon of water and eight (8) ounces of undiluted white vinegar. Allow the filter to soak for 20 minutes.
4. After soaking, rinse it several times with clean water. Place the PermaWick™ Filter in a location where it can drip dry while you clean the other parts of your humidifier.
5. Remove the water tank from the base and empty any water that is left in the tank. Soak the base in a mixture of one (1) gallon of water and eight (8) ounces of vinegar for 20 minutes.
6. After soaking, wipe the base with a soft cloth or sponge to remove any mineral build up. Rinse with clean water several times. If you are planning on storing the humidifier, be sure the base is completely dry.
7. Fill the water tank with one (1) gallon of water and eight ounces of undiluted white vinegar. Replace the tank cap and shake the tank vigorously until all interior surfaces of the tank have been exposed to the water/vinegar mixture.
8. Empty the tank of the water/vinegar mixture. Rinse it several times with clean water and then replace the tank cap. If you are planning on storing the humidifier, dry it inside and out, leaving the cap off to allow the tank to completely dry. Continue to clean the other parts of your humidifier.
9. Remove the water diffuser cap by squeezing the two tabs as shown in Figure 3. Rinse the cap in clean water to remove any debris. If the cap contains hard water residue, soak it in a mixture of one (1) quart of water and two (2) ounces of vinegar for 20 minutes.
Rinse well and reinstall the water diffuser cap. Do not expose motor or other electrical components to water.
10. Wipe the surfaces of the main housing with a soft cloth.
11. Once all the parts are clean, reassemble the humidifier, and follow the USING YOUR HUMIDIFIER to continue use. If you are storing the humidifier, make sure the parts are completely dry, reassemble, and store in a dry location

Cleaning water tray

I usually just balance the tray upside down on top of the base and fill the edges with vinegar. You could also put the the tray in a bowl filled with vinegar and submerge the whole thing.

Humidifier does not reset

According to Holmes, one of the causes of the Reset light staying on is scale buildup on the heating element.

Remove Scale: Allow to cool before maintenance.
1. Repeat steps 1-5 in the Daily Maintenance section.
2. Clean the base by partially filling the base with one
8-oz cup of undiluted white vinegar. Let solution stand
20 minutes, cleaning all interior surfaces with a soft
brush. Dampen a cloth with undiluted white vinegar
and wipe out entire base to remove scale.
3. Rinse with clean warm water to remove scale and the
white vinegar solution before beginning to disinfect
the tank.
4. Wipe the heating element clean with a soft cloth after
it has had chance to cool.

If the scale has really built up it might take longer than 20 mins for the vinegar to get rid of it and you might need to refresh with new vinegar.

Your Manual can be found at this link:

Cleaning the filter

Here is the link for your manual:
http://www.hunterfanhq.com/hiw-prod/orderinv/frames/ps_frame.htm

How to clean your filter:
The PermaWick™ Filter should be cleaned in a vinegar and water solution to remove any mineral buildup. Place in a solution of one (1) gallon of water and eight (8) ounces of undiluted white vinegar. Allow the filter to soak for 20 minutes.
After soaking, rinse it several times with clean water. Place the PermaWick™ Filter in a location where it can drip dry while you clean the other parts of your humidifier.

They say the frequency that you will have to clean your filter depends on yoru quality of water. The harder the water you have the more you will have to clean it.

Good Luck.
