the rule of thumb is 1.5 times the amount of ram so if you have 512mb set it to 768, 1 gb of ram = 1.5 gb virtual memory.

FREQUENTLY HANGING
There are a lot of things that can be a factor for this.

Do you perform maintenance such as defraging drive, cleaning registry etc.
Do you use anti-virus, do you have the minimum requirement for the anti-virus and do you update and scan your pc often.
Do you get memory error messages......a faulty hard drive could also be a great problem

Solutions
  1. Get a software like "tuneup utilities" and perform a full pc maintenance.
  2. Make sure that you are safe from virus. Computer anti-virus are never 100% safe and the best practice is to be proactive (I term that as the best anti-virus).
  3. You need to check for hardware errors such as memory and hard drive errors. This are the most important when it comes to hanging Pc........and unless i do forget.
  4. A bad power supply and faulty motherboard can also be counted on, Though i doublt that can be your problem. Just perform step 1-3. I am sure you should be good to go. Good Luck

Will not load games
First of all get a good Antivirus software and scan your PC thoroughly after UPDATING it. Updating the Virus software is extremely important.
Secondly after doing the above step install a Registry cleaning software. I recommend Uniblue Registry booster or Regcure. Virus and unclean registry are number 1 reasons to PC slow down.
Check your hard disk if it is near to full. Use the Windows built in disk cleaning software to clean unnecessary files. After that De-fragmenting the disk will also help a lot. To de-fragment a disk Go to accessories in the start menu and then go to system tools. Find disk de-fragmentation and run it the PC performance will dramatically enhance but Virus and registry cleaning is recommended to be done first.

My pc contamenate af assorted virus, what will i
reinstall the operation system cause once contaminated ...there is no antivirus available to clean it ...and if it does usually you will end up with side effects like missing files from the system ( strictly necessary files for proper function )..
the viruses usually attack functionality related files and so ...you have to reinstall and format the C drive (partition ) during the operation ...so to be sure you end up clean ...and after that get an anti-virus ..even a free one it is a kinda protection ...I recommend AVG free..its a pretty good one ..and it updates itself daily
even in the free version..

My lap top get hanged after loading windows, when i start it.i have refresh my windows for more then 4 times, even i format my hard disk as well

The problem you have explained here is not the OS problem.

Please don't format your system anymore.

The following may be your problem....
  • when the windows is loaded the system hangs due to interference among various application software like messengers, anti virus etc.
so you should disable the option which execute them at the starting of the system.

so open each software which automatically starts at the starting of the windows and disable the option of automatic starting after boot.

  • The other problem may be your firewall.Disable the firewall and check if system is working fine. if yes the look for the program which the firewall is stopping and disable it.
  • The last reason can be your anti virus which is stopping the execution of certain program. Update the anti virus and scan fully.
i know that you have mentioned that your system completely hangs..so how you will do all this..right?

For that leave the system idle and keep trying the refresh button.
or
you can do this with safe mode.

or
Do end task operation.

I m having problem of lots of hanging ups in dell inspiron 6400

01. If the Laptop is under Warranty, you will get the technical support from the wep after typing the following website :
http://support.ap.dell.com/support/supportrequests/api/create.aspx

02. Frequent hanging may be due to Harddisk crash or latest antivirus patch not updated.

03. Please update the latest antivirus patches and run for any virus checking.

04. Over phone you will get Gold Technical support from Dell Service Support Team.

05. If Dell team is not able to solve the problem, either they will replace the Laptop or send some local Dell Authorized service engineer to give solution for the same.

06. On Daily basis, please take a backup in DVD CDs-R/W (4.7 GB Memory) after selecting the files to be backed up daily or weekly.

07. Better advise to replace the Laptop or Replace the HDD from Dell Team.

be sure you installed all available updates including service packs for both OS and office 2003 suite. Did you try the "Detect and Repair" feature in Help? If you just added some memory lately, then it might be the cause. I hope you clean your system from spywares and viruses too.
