If it is a top load washer I would check the lid switch, you should hear a click everytime you close the lid. If that is ok, there is a coupler between the motor and transmission, if it is a whirlpool, maytag, estate, admiral or kenmore.

If your washer doesn't spin but DOES make noise when it SHOULD be spinning, it's most likely the motor coupler. It's located between the motor and the transmission and it takes the place of a belt. If this part is out, your agitator will not agitate either. To test for this problem you can start your washer and use a screw driver to gently press down on the lid switch so that the machine will try to agitate. Do this test with no clothes in the washer so you can see clearly. If it does not agitate you know this is the problem. Hope this helps.
