Completely resolder the virtical circuit, including the vert. ic. i have also at times found an open resistor near the flyback that provides b+ to the vert. ic. if you can find a pinout if the ic, find the b+ pin & trace it back to the fluyback. good luck.

I have a tv that has line going side to side

The line is horizontal but means no vertical deflection (set deflects picture from middle to top and bottom.

Either bad solder connections at vertical output chip or a bad part somewhere in that circuit.

I only see one solid horizontal line on my tv

It lost Vertical sweep either due to open fuse resistor feed the Vertical output circuits, failed vertical/oscillator IC, failed Vertical york (on the neck of the picture tube). Those are what you need to check. This is CRT TV, the repair shop will charge at lest $35 to tell you what I just indicate, to repair it iwll more likely to be in $100 range.

Horizontal hold troubleshooting. Can hear but pic is like a line on the screen. Tried adjustments on back

If the line is half way up the picture. This is a vertical problem. Most likely the vertical output IC or a bad solder joint near the IC.

I have a three year old model pvc2542 tv/vcr combo the picture is just a line in the center of the screen

Bad vertical deflection circuit, unless you have a bad connection (bang on set to set it it fills out for a second) . you will need components replaced such as the IC, capacitors possibly a fuse from the power source to the vertical IC.
If its a bad connection soldering the IC pins is not to hard if you are OK with taking it apart yourself.

When turned on only gets a straight line of color in middle of screen

You lost your vertical sweep. most likely the vertical output IC or a power supply source is the problem.

if there is only one horizontal line you have a problem with vertical deflection section

PVQ-2510 service menu

If you fix the vertical cirrcuit correctly, there is no need to go into service menu as your vertical should go back to normal. Re-check your work. I remember one cap on this set that gets overlooked all the time so you may want to check it. It is cap C413 - ceramic cap and sometimes it shorts causing a vertical shrinking as you described. Good luck.
