HP compaq has f10 bios which needs a hidden partition. XP home installation has to use the restore cd from HP?
Hp restore cd does its own partitions and formating on any used disk. You did not have to wipe it and partition the primary. If you did any logical partition, you may run into an empty partition and stopped booting.
Try partition only one primary? Then reinstall hp restore cd XP home.
Try f10 to restore to default, then install XP home.. Your hp restore cd must have HP label on it, not just another microsoft install disk.
If the cd is not HP, the bootldr is not in the hidden partition where f10 is. that is why it can not boot.
Since the cd can not boot when installing, try to get one from ebay?

I have the restore cd from hp. I've wiped the disk, repartitioned and tried to load the os but it only gets to the first restart then I get a blank light blue screen with nothing on it but a cursor and it goes no further ever.
so now what do I do?
Same result. I made one partition and it still stops completely at first restart. Any more suggestions? I'm about ready to take it to someone in town to fix.
f10 gets me nothing--just goes to the c drive (or cd). I tried the repair choice and it only goes to an administrator password (which I set at admin and got an invalid notice, then set for none and still got an invalid notice). This is crazy. My disks are HP. Someone had messed with this computer before it was given to us because there was no restore information on it and no restore point. So when I first tried to reinstall xp it started this freezing up at the first restart and nothing goes past that.
The CD is from HP
