The touchpad sensitivity is very inconvenient, as the slightest contact with the edge of my palm causes the cursor to jump around the screen, highlight and delete text as I type, etc..... There is no "touchpad" tab when I select "Mouse" from the Control panel. I downloaded the touchpad driver from the Dell website, but when I tried to install it I got the error: "Could not find OS specific startup program." Can anyone help me with this?

Depending on the sensitivity and settings of the touchpad, it may register undesired motions as mouse controls, causing the cursor to jump erratically. The software drivers that includes with its systems have sensitivity options that help alleviate this problem and ensure that only deliberate touchpad motions and taps cause the cursor to move.
Click on the Start menu and open the Control Panel. Choose an "Icon View" option from the "View by" dropdown menu, then click the "Mouse" icon. Navigate to the "Device Settings" tab and click on the Synaptics device in the list. If you have installed and use custom software other than a Synaptics application for controlling the touchpad, select it instead. Click the "Settings" button. Click the "+" symbol to expand the "Pointing" section in the left frame, and then the "Sensitivity" section. Click on "PalmCheck." If you have replaced the Synaptics drivers, the menu may use a different set of options. Click and drag the bar to the right, closer to the "Maximum" setting. An increased PalmCheck setting will help decrease cursor jumping due to accidental palm activations, a common occurrence when typing. Click on "Touch Sensitivity." Click and drag the bar to the right, closer to the "Heavy Touch" end. This will ensure light brushes by fingers or accidental activations by other objects will not cause the cursor to jump. Click "Apply" to test the settings, and "OK" when satisfied to save the changes and close the window.

This is a problem that affects certain laptops. The sensitivity of the touchpad is the cause of the problem. As you type, your wrists and the lower part of the palm of your hands either brush or pass very close to the touchpad, activating it and causing the cursor to jump. Static electricity building up in the typist's body and passing to the touchpad can also contribute to this effect.
The solution, if the problem is very bad with your laptop, is to use a comfortable Wrist Rest that raises the palm and wrist high enough so that typing is possible and comfortable but unintended contact with the touchpad is avoided. See an example below.
I hope this helps.

There's no real way to change the sensitivity of your mouse, aside from changing the speed. A possible solution would be to use a USB mouse and disable your touchpad. Hope this helps!
this is common and is caused generally by two fingers touching the little touchpad, if your navigating with one finger as we all do on the touchpad and another finger touches it the cursor will junp to the position of the second touch. most people dont realise they are doing it but these things are so sensitive that it pick up the slightest touch. if this isnt the problem the go to the control panel and select device manager then click on touchpad or input device and then go the properties and update the driver. ok i hope that helps. let me know how you go.
When I have seen this happen, the touch pad was set overly sensitive. When you are typing, your palm may be moving the cursor. If this happens at other times, then this can be corrected in the control panel. Go there and click on touch pad. It will have settings to set the sensitivity for the mouse pad, speed, double click/single, etc. You can change the settings to be more suited to your hands.
FYI: Older laptops were more susceptible to touchpad errors and I have even seen the area on either side of the touchpad to cause the mouse cursor to move and jump.
i have the same problem with my HP Pavilion DV4 they were unhelpful on the phone about it. It's been happening with this computer since I bought it. The cursor will just jump around randomly for a few minutes being unresponsive. Then go back to normal.
Either you are touching the touchpad with your palms as you type, or the touchpad is set to be very sensitive. Either way, you should reduce the sensitivity of the touchpad. Go into the control panel, and go into the mouse properties. On the hardware tab, you should be able to find advanced properties and the sensitivity adjustment. Move the slider to the left to reduce sensitivity. If you stroke the pad very very gently with your finger, the cursor should not move at all. adjust sensitivity until this happens.
Reduce the sensitivity until the cursor stops jumping. This will fix it. :)
Here a suggestion, it may or may not be the problem! Sometimes the sensitivity of the touchpad might be too low and your hands inadvertently move the cursor.
Also the touchpad has a builtin feature that prevents accidental contact(palm check)
You can lower the sensitivity by going into control panel and open Mouse! Go to Device Settings and with the touchpad selected click on settings. There you'll see sensitivity and you can adjust the settings.
You can also modify the palm check features right there!
if you have any complications or if that's not it, kindly let me know!
