Does it even turn past OFF?
During any part of the cycle it will randomly decide to "stall" and then the programme knob will just keep clicking round through each position without stopping. Where the programme has stalled the machine does not continue i.e. most of the time when the machine is full of water.
The timer is shot.
Thanks Kevin. Guess it is shopping for a new machine this afternoon for me then.
What is the model number? I might be able to get you a price on a timer so you don't have to buy a new machine.
No worries. Been and purchased a new machine as the washing was piling up quickly but thanks for the offer.

I have an Indesit model W103 bought in 2004 from Comet (I think it may be a "Comet Special". I returned this afternoon after leaving it to do a rinse + spin to find the program knob turning continuously. I think it may be a general fault indication in this model. By switching off, moving the knob to a stop position, and switching back on the movement was stopped. However the machine wouldn't start any program after this. I looked around the machine. Scraped a pile of limescale out of the debris trap. Still no go. I then took top & back cover off the machine. Saw that the main motor beneath tub had brushes & inspected them. They were worn right down, no movement left in carbon as I removed the holders. When the brush holders are removed the plastic parts can be separated to reveal the brush in a brass sleeve, I bent the lugs on the sleeves up to advance the brushes slightly towards the commutator and reassembled the motor. Machine started on next try. The commutator doesn't appear to be badly burned so I'll try to obtain new brushes.
I would not recommend anyone who is unsure of their ability to try this.
DO UNPLUG YOUR MACHINE FROM ELECTRICITY BEFORE INVESTIGATING
