Battery not recharging.

I have a IBM T41 thinkpad. The battery is not staying charged. I believe I have a bad AC adapter b/c when I borrow a friend's adapter, it works fine. Am I assuming correctly that I need a new adapter?

If your unit works with your friend's adapter , then it is your AC adapter. You can do a Google search and find it on the web. Also Targus makes a good universal kit that will work.

Look on the charger itself & it will have the correct output voltage & polarity stamped on the charger. Then get a volt meter to verify if the correct output voltage is present. If the volt meter reads less than what is stamped on the charger, then I would recommend replacing the charger at that point.

Seems the laptop connector has been disturbed, pull, tugged on. A connection most likely is loose in the machine(motherboard) or could be a defect in
manufacturing. If new return it or ask the manufacturer for a repair/replace.
They will most likely suspect customer damage.

Sounds like you need a new battery.
It's not just a battery in a case, it also has a small circuit board inside to control the charging etc, if that's faulty it won't charge, or if it has dead cells in it won't charge.

My i b m will not turn on with ac but will work with battery
possible problems: charge port has been damaged or it simply wont work (common ibm problems)...
Solution: go to the local repair shop to repair or change the ac port.

IBM Thinkpad won't work with adapter and won't recharge battery
Well he shorted out the regulator inside that tells the unit the battery needs to be recharged in witch transfers it to AC current, on this unit the rugulator is implemented in the motherboard and that wold not be practical ether to replace unless you find one for parts on www.ebay.com for cheap and do it yourself that would be the only way that would cost you less money- thanks

My ibm laptop contionusly beeps and says power scource is battery,when i press esc, it boots normally and shuts down in about 15 mins to half an hour
Either:
A. Bad battery
Or
B Bad power supply.

Sounds like the battery isnt charging correctly , the beeping is warning you it is running out of power.

Take the battery out , and boot normally with the ac adapter.

Does it work?

If yes, Get new battery. about 70-90 dollars.

If no. Get new ac adapter. 20-40 dollars.

Ibm thinkpad no power with ac power adapter but works with battery
If prior to this it works intermittently with the AC adapter, it means the connection from the adapter power unit to the motherboard was lost and this is a typical problem with the Thinkpad. It needs a re-soldering job and not something that one can do without a proper repair manual on how to open the laptop. Try googling your problem and find out if someone has the same experience and managed to resolder by him/herself.

I assume you have verified the battery and AC adapter with another machine or a voltmeter.

If none of the above get it going, you most likely have motherboard issues, possibly a blown fuse.

Or possibly a keyboard Power On switch problem.
