Question about Dell 810 All-In-One InkJet Printer
My parents recently bought a new machine from Dell, and as this printer was on special offer at the time, they snapped one up. However, I'm having real problems installing it for them. It connects via USB - no problems there, the machine (running XP Home Edition) 'finds' the printer without any problems. It's the driver/software that's causing the problem. I tried installing the software on the CD that came with the printer, but it doesn't seem to have had the desired effect, as no printer information appears in the 'Printers' system screen, and when I try printing anything, all that happens is the document is sent to the MS Office Document Image Writer and is saved to disk (which I suppose is logical, as it is set as the default printer - because the computer doesn't think there *are* any other printers!). I've downloaded the driver for the printer from the Dell website, but as it's basically what's on the CD, that's not helped us any. Every time the machine is turned on, it finds the printer connected once more - but we just can't get the driver installed so we can use it! Any ideas?
Do you have windows Vista? Sometimes this causes problems with software installation.

From what you describe the printer is not installed correctly. I would try uninstalling everything associated with this device, unplugging it and then retry the installation process again. I don't know if the instructions are clear but you should not connect the USB cable to the printer until after the software is installed or when prompted by the software wizard.

You generally install the software first, not hardware, so disconnect printer, uninstal any printer driver you already installed. Re-start pc and use the printer installation cd for the driver, run set up programme as directed, then re-connect printer when prompted, it should then be recognised and pop up in your task bar. It should then say 'hardware installed and ready to use' and ask if you wish to set printer as default printer.

Uninstall the driver again and restart pc.
Next time your pc finds new hardware and asks for the drivers do not click install automatically, click instead install manually.
When the next box pops up, insert driver cd click on the radio button 'search in this location' and highlight on the drop down menu your cd rom whether it be your d,e, or f drive.
Make sure then; that the cd drive whirrs away, this will tell you it's searching in the cd for the driver.
The found new hardware will change to your printers' manufacturer name and hopefully will be ready to use.
If you still cannot get it installed, either the cable is faulty or the printer has a recognition fault.

I'm fairly sure I followed the instructions correctly the first time I tried to install the printer, but since I've had no joy, I tried uninstalling everything and starting from scratch as suggested.
However: no joy. Even after uninstalling everything and starting from scratch, the installation process doesn't correctly install the printer. Windows comes back every time with the pop-up stating that there was a problem with the installation and the device may not work correctly - even though the installation runs its course and seems to have installed the printer properly. When the PC is restarted, the "Add new hardware" pop up appears as if nothing had happened.
Someone on another forum suggested running a system restore to restore the PC to its state before I originally tried to install the printer, but System Restore has failed to change the computers setup ("No changes have been made"). So it looks like I'm back to square one!
