I have an IBM T30 Thinkpad. When I power on the laptop after shutting down it will not start up. I get a beep, then 3 beeps then 1 beep. The only way to get it to start is to remove the battery for an hour, then plug it in to an external moniter and power it back up. It then works. I have called IBM who thought it had to do with the memory. I do not want to send it in but I can not close it up because then it will freeze and I have to take out the battery to fix it. Any ideas?

Re: Start up problems
Normally 3 beeps then 1 is a checksum error, which is related to memory size/types and/or timings being reported as an error in the bios.
Try also running in safe mode (F8) on start up and see if you get the beeps; because being able to start it up with an external monitor may mean that the memory error is related to amount that is used for your integrated graphics or a graphics driver error.

Video memory error. The BIOS cannot write to the frame buffer memory on the video card. Since the frame buffer memory is on the video board's memory chips then you will have to replace the entire board.
It's your memory, or more to the point, the memory slots. take all memory out, install 1 piece in the slot closest to the back of the laptop, push down on the memory as if pushing it into the motherboard, and hold pressure while booting.
Bet that works. if not, let me know.
I've got the same machine.
i've been encountered that problem in my office...that kind of problem with regard to the memory cos it is a long beep of sounds..maybe your memory from your laptop will loss contact from the slot or the memory was defective ..if you don't how to fix that ...i suggest to bring to the service center to diagnose the problem...
