Flashing Green Light/ Computer can't communicate with printer......

I can't get my Dell A920 to print, at all. Also the green light keeps flashing, seems to be constant, than at times it seems to flash 1,2,3 (pauses) 1,2,3. And lastly I get the message saying that the computer can't communicate with the printer. I have read all there is to read with regards to the trouble shooting tips. I dont have the owners manual but am certain the problem can be fixed maybe by holding the power button or some thing of the sort. I have a very important paper to hand in soon and am in serious need of help. Thanks for any assistance. BTW...did i mention that it's a very important paper....due the 19th....please help...lol, thx:)

Hi, I have the same problem with a Dell A920. I bought it in a garage sale and I can't make it do anything and when I turn it on with the USB cable join to the computer the power button keep flashing a green light like 1,2 pause ...1,2 pause , when I unplug the USB cable the light stays all green with no flashing.

I did download the software for Dell website and installed the unit I get the message saying that the computer can't communicate with the printer. I would like your help, please.
    thanks your answer

i downloaded my printer but i dont have the cdand now it keeps saying thatthe printer cant comunicate with computer

  • Anonymous Mar 14, 2009

I was in the midst of printing some documents when the printer (Dell A920) quit working and said it could not communicate. I did everything the troubleshooting guide said to try: turned the power off and on again, unplugged and reconnected both ends of the USB cable, checked for paper jams, checked the ink level, made sure all the printer settings were correct, and finally I uninstalled the printer software, restarted the computer, and reinstalled it. Nothing helped.

The only clue I have is the power button on the printer flashes green in this pattern: o oo o oo o oo o oo

When I try to print a message appears on the computer screen saying it cannot communicate with the printer.

When I press copy either on the printer itself or from within the computer, the copying mechanism kicks in and does everything except print out the page.

The scanner part still works fine, with no communication problem with the computer at all.

So it is a matter of common deduction that communication is good except to the printing mechanism inside the printer itself.

    Anybody have a solution?

I had this problem but i re-installed the cartridges and that has stopped the green light flashing, its now a solid light. But it still won't print.

Hi. The flashing code signifies that there is a fault with the connection between the ink cartridge and the printer - usually because either the tape is still on the cartridge or maybe some glue from the tape still on the contacts. In my case, I think the cartridge was simply knackered, so I threw it away and opened yet another ink cartridge. It now works fine.

If you want to test yours, simply take out both ink cartridges, and re-insert them one at a time. If you've put a working cartridge in the flashing will stop; if you've put the dodgy one in it'll still flash. Just replace the dodgy one.

Hope this helps.

That fixed the problem...I had some cartridges refilled at the corner store...saved me about 25 bucks for each cartridge, but you know you get what you pay for...will go back to the Dell ones. Thanks so much...I thought I was going crazy....ready to purchase another printer.....Thanks again for the information. You were very helpful.

Awesome! That fixed my problem. Funny...Dell didn't tell me any of that.

Throw this piece of **** "free" printer away and buy on that doesn't require you to use tape to hold the black ink cartridge in. This A920 Dell printer sucks period. Spend $50 and buy the cheapest one from BestBuy, it is miles better than this one.

I particularly like the hammer option, sounds like a good way to solve this problem. Make sure you wear eye protection or perhaps a full face shield and a hard hat. Double O buckshot in 12 gauge works good too. Then go buy a real printer.

Try removing usb connection from pc into another usb port and let windows find the printer and install the driver again. Delete all current documents relating to the printer and then delete the initial printer to stop confusion as to which one to use.

I also had this problem and had the same symptom as posted above, with the pattern of blinking as follows: o oo o oo o oo o oo

There is probably a common diagnostic routine that runs and blinks various patterns for various problems - known only to Dell.

When I opened the hood the printer cartridges did move to the center. I removed both black ink and color ink. NOTE: The blinking stopped and the light was steady - interesting. Seems that the blinking indicates some problem sensed in the ink cartridge(s).

I cleaned the cartridges (Both were genuine Dell products purchased at Staples). Re-installed black. Light stayed on steady. Cool. Re-installed color. Light started its blinking. Bingo!

I chanced to have another color cartridge on hand and installed that one - the light stayed steady and now I can print!

So apparently a "BAD" ink cartridge was causing this problem, with no decent error message to inform the user. Bad DELL, Bad, Bad, Bad.

The green buttton on my Dell 725 printer is flashing and it will not print. I have tried unplugging everything as suggested, but am still having no luck.

I have this same problem, except with the Dell AIO A920 Printer. It started when I experienced a paper jam and tried canceling the print order in the queue. I've tried every possible way to try and bring the printer out of this comatose state it's in, and nothing doing. I'm about ready to get a new printer. I guess this is what you get with a cheap printer Dell threw in free with a larger order.

3) Green Fast-Flashing, Red Off = Printer off-line.
4) Green Slow-Flashing, Red Off = Processing Data.
5) Green Off, Red On = Cover Opened, Toner Empty or Developer Unit / Drum unit missing.

7) Green Off, Red Slow-Flashing = Paper Empty or Paper tray is not inserted.
