My 6 year old Toshiba 53HX71 rear projection TV shows a fuzzy picture a few minutes after turning it on. The shape of objects and their colors can be seen but very blurred. The sound is fine.
This problem does not happen every time though. Sometimes I turn on the set and it works fine. I've pretty much eliminated any cable connections as the propblem.
I don't really want to spend 2 or 3 hundred dollars (or more) to fix the problem. I would rather put that money towards a new LCD TV. However, if I can get away with an inexpensive fix, I will hold off another year or two before purchasing a new set. Any help would be appreciated.

Yep, your problem is a relatively easy one to repair if you know how to solder. You better repair it before it blows the fuse though. There are two capacitors in the main power supply that are coming loose and need to be re soldered. There is a Toshiba service bulletin about it. They are marked C809 and C810 on the main power supply board. Good Luck

You say it's a DLP yet the model number shows as a standard projection, anyway what you seem to have is a Hyper board problem, many shops can repair this Fragile board but it's not for the weekend tv tech to try to do

You have bad solder connections in the deflection circuit. Call a good TV tech unless you know what you are doing. You could get an electrical shock from a charged capacitor.

This is a convergence problem; in the customer menu there is an option to adjust it----if red or blue will not move in some direction---one of the two convergence IC's is bad and both need to be replaced.
I have step by step instructions telling what you will need for this repair. They are in Microsoft word----let me know if you want them and I will email them to you. You can buy both chips for this set on Ebay for about 13 dollars plus shipping for a pair.
