I had the same problem with my canon powershot sd 400. The shutters would not shut and the lense was halfway out. When I turn on the camera, the screen saver stays on, and after a few seconds, it turns itself off. I got alittle frastrated as our Co. x-mass party was coming up soon, and I realy need to use it. I pushed the lense down so hard and the shutters closed!!!! I then wiped them with alcohol to ease the movement. Now the camera works perfect. I suggest you clean your camera shutters with a cotton bulb and alcohol, and let it dry as alcohol evaporates real quick. Good luck.

If you've replaced the batteries with fresh ones, it probably has a broken zoom assembly. It'll have to be replaced by a repair shop.

DSC-HX5, Lens is Stuck in Zoom out mode. Turn On works but screen stays black. Automatically turns off after 10-20 seconds.

Since there is nothing you can do to fix this at home you have 2 choices, replace the camera or send it back to the manufacturer for exchange (very expensive)

Error-C1

Dirt /dust in the lens and lens gear box ( this drives zooming only ) preventing optimum functioning. Lens cannot properly come on line ( shutter and diaphragh mechanism then do not come on line ) and the camera switches off. Solution : is ether replace lens unit or dismantle lens to clean out ( from gear box and the helicoil of the lens ).

BLANK LCD SCREEN

The shutter in the lens is stuck closed. You need to take the camera to a shop where they will replace the lens assembly.
