The palm tree is a slow shutter "twilight" setting to capture low light levels. Try resetting all functions by turning on the camera then pushing the "reset" button - you'll find it next to the recharge/DC IN socket on the back. Push it with a toothpick or paper clip. If that doesn't correct it, it could be an aperture or shutter problem that's a job for a shop.

If you've reset all the controls to factory, it sounds like the flash is not charging. Check to see if it'll fire in bright daylight situation. If it does - the flash isn't charging. If it still doesn't work, it probably has a shutter problem.

I have no idea what the symbol is.

I suggest that you check that your memory stick is not locked, not full and is inserted properly into the camera.

Reset the camera (button under the connector flap, below the zoom buttons on the back of the camera)

Sony DSC-P72 close up photos

A common problem is that you have some 3.2 Megapixel (MP) and that image is all of 640x480 or 0.3072 M. That means you could move back from the camera, shoot at 3.2 MP then crop out a 640x480 image that may be in focus.
