Question about Canon Pixma MP500 All-In-One InkJet Printer
The other possibility is that the grease on the Carriage is too viscous.... had the same problem with two separate printers... there is a service bulletin which suggests that the grease needs to be replaced at a service center. When I read about the problem I slid the carraige back and forth along its track several times and the error lite dissapeared and printer is working well, so far (3 days)

I had the same problem with my canon printer. i had just taken it out of the box and turned it on to see if it is working. i was happy to see that it turned on but to my disappointment, it reads an error 5110 (. i took it to a local canon service center, told the technician about the problem. sure enough 10 minutes later he fixed the problem. he said it's a common problem caused by some wires that gets tangled inside the right side housing of the printer. make sure to check if the printer head moves to the center or cartridge-loading position... if this doesn't happen, turn off your printer and proceed to the next steps... this is what he did... unscrewed all the screws to remove the housing or cover on the rightside of the printer (make sure the printer is facing you)... uncoil or untangle the wires... after you did that make sure to set or rest the wires to where it can't be tangled or spooled again. you can use tie straps to secure the wires away. screw the housing side back on the printer. turn your printer on...lift the front cover... if the cartridge dock moves to the center... YOUR FREAKIN PRINTER IS FIXED!!! IF NOT... TAKE IT TO YOUR LOCAL CANON FIXER-UPPER... REMEMBER TO TELL THEM THAT YOU RECENTLY BOUGHT YOUR PRINTER AND IT'S STILL UNDER WARRANTY SO YOU WON'T PAY A DAMN THING. I HOPE THIS HELPS.
