Just noticed it makes a different sound in slow mode. Not sure if it was before. All other speeds sound fine. Is this normal?

It appears that you've got some internal transmission gear issues, and a situation similar to my wife's mixer, which we got new in Dec 2006. It could be as simple as the gears have become loose and are making different contact, hence the noise. The higher the speed, the louder, higher pitched sound you'll get. It may also be indicative of a potential gear failure (after all our increasing noise, the bevel gear broke and the mixer 'froze'). If your mixer is under warranty, contact Kitchenaid. If it's out of warranty, then take it apart and do a diagnostic exam of the gearing. Whatever you find you should be able to fix yourself. Be sure to have the Kitchenaid Part Manual (Part No. 8212278 Rev D) on hand if you attempt to disassemble yourself. It also lists all the parts so that you can determine, which parts, if any have failed. You'd think that the Kitchenaid name would warranty their mixers for a lifetime... So much for quality in America today!

thebsjunk - I don't know if you've canned the old mixer. If you've bought a new KA, congratulations to Kitchenaid. If you haven't, there's still a possiblilty that you might be able to fix it yourself. (For the price of KA mixers you'd think they's last a 'lifetime', but alas, KA quality is sorely lacking from their current products...but I editorialize.)
It's quite possilbe that you've had a gear tooth break in the transmission, which would lock up and prevent the planetary gear (agitator) from rotating in mixing bowl. This is what happend to my wife's 6 Quart Pro KA mixer. Since it was out of warranty, I decided to troubleshoot myself. First I downloaded the Parts List manual from the KA website so I knew what to expect. Then I easily disassemble the mixer to find that a bevel gear tooth had broken. After ordering the correct parts, and reassembling, it works better than when we first upacked it. The loud whining is absent...
If the motors gone bad, you can still replace that, too. Fixing your mixer yourself is much easier than shipping it off to a repair center, and you have the gratification of doing it yourself.

Hi - I've been searching for general info on KitchenAid stand mixers and ran across this so I'm throwing my $.02 in... Since KA stand mixer bases are essentially made of cast metal parts, there is a very slim chance that there is a lateral misalignment (side-side) unless it got dropped...eek! Sounds like a head height adjustment issue. Check out this from KitchenAid Conversations:

Hi REEDKL, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Based on your mixer’s symptoms, my first thought is that your mixer’s internal controller assembly (the speed knob), has gone bad. The inspection and troubleshooting of the control assembly is something you can do yourself, particularly if your mixer is out of warranty. Just be sure to have the correct Part List manual around when you start to disassemble your mixer.
If you're lacking one, you can download it from the KA website. Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in this case, KP26M1, and then select the last file: KP2671XWH3.pdf (325.07 KB) that appear under Parts List (21). Check to see that it matches your mixer model.
Turn to page 4, Case, Gearing and Planetary Assembly and locate Illus. #8, Control Assembly. This is what you’re looking for when you get the top (Illus. #1) off the mixer head.
First check to see if any of the connections have come loose. If everything looks tight then you probably need to replace it. Unfortunately the whole controller assembly is on a little PC board filled with resistors, capacitors and diodes, which was not meant to be 'home fixed' and where my ‘electronic expertise' ends. A local small appliance repair shop should be able to determine if the controller assembly is functioning properly or not, or you can just order replacement parts without the testing.
Although you don’t need to get further inside your mixer to make this repair, here are some links to several excellent websites that detail the disassembling/reassembly of a KA Mixer that you might want to keep in your ‘toolbox’, should you have to delve inside your mixer in the future. The mixers displayed in the links may be different than your KA model, but the principles are the same.
Between these three websites and their excellent pictures and descriptions and your Parts List manual, you should now be able replace any part to your KA mixer.
If you feel this repair is beyond your capability, then I would seek out a local small appliance repair shop in your area. KA Customer Care can give you names of local KA authorized repair shops in your area, but you can also do an online search to supplement what KA may provide you. Call to explain your circumstances and find out their hourly rate and get an estimate of what they think it would cost to repair your mixer. Also, always obtain three or more estimates – do some comparison shopping.

I think you have a K45SS. It sounds like there is a problem with one of the gears, probably the worm gear. The worm gear is designed to be the first to fail if the mixer has struggled with a heavy dough or other difficult to mix substance. The best way to establish the cause will be to open the head up and check the gears for signs of damage.
